History

The first record of Ascot United comes from 1928, with teams formed and re-formed until 1965 when a men’s team, who played their games at Sunninghill, were established in The Wells public house in Cheapside village. Soon after, the club gained permission from Ascot Racecourse to convert land into a football pitch where the club is still located today.

The current Ascot United began to take shape in the early 1990s with an expansion of youth football and the foundation of The East Berks Youth League by club chairman Keith Wickes. In 1990 a new clubhouse was erected at the Racecourse Ground, followed a year later by a new 11-a-side pitch and training area.

In 2006 the club won the Reading Senior League and promotion to the Hellenic League and completed a league & cup double by winning the Reading Evening Post Cup Final at Reading’s Madjeski Stadium.

Promotion to the Hellenic League Premier Division in 2010 was followed by the Ascot’s first entry into the FA Cup, beaten 2-1 at home by Wembley FC in front of a record crowd of 1,150.

2018/19 saw the installation of a 3G playing surface at the Racecourse Ground before the COVID19 pandemic struck.

In 2022 The Racecourse saw a new attendance record of 1,267 for a Berks & Bucks Senior Cup semi-final against Wycombe Wanderers, Ascot winning on penalties, before being beaten by Reading U23 in the final.

Ascot bounced back from cup final defeat to go on and win the Combined Counties League Premier Division North title to secure promotion to step 4 of the NLS, followed up by beating Newport Pagnell Town at Wembley to lift the FA Vase.

Now in the Isthmian League South Central Division, Ascot United secured a 13th place finish last season. Step 4 football also meant a first entry into the FA Trophy, with wins over Horndean and Lancing before exiting the competition at the 3rd Qualifying Round stage with a 2-0 defeat to Whitehawk.

Recent Form

Now in their second season in the Isthmian League South Central, Ascot United have begun with 10 points from 7 games to see themselves sat 11th in the table. Their run in the FA Trophy includes knocking out Isthmian South East clubs Merstham (5-0) and Margate (1-0), both at home.

Since beating Margate in the last round, Ascot have lost 2 out of 2, beaten by Raynes Park Vale on Saturday and Hartley Wintney on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s FA Trophy tie will be a first ever meeting between the clubs.

The Manager

Jamie Tompkins has been in charge at Ascot Racecourse since 2018, leading the club to promotion to the Isthmian League and their FA Vase win.

Jamie is also Senior Manager of Football Development at Premier League club Brentford.

Key Man

Forward Taylor Morgan scored the only goal in Ascot’s 2nd Qualifying Round win over Margate, his 5th of the season so far.

An experienced striker who has had spells in MLS, Scotland and Sweden, he returned to Ascot in December 2023 having previous featured for the club from 2020-2022.
