The third game of a busy opening week of the season sees Invicta travel to north London to visit Wingate & Finchley
Invicta
Invicta have kicked off the season with 4 points from our opening 2 fixtures at home to Carshalton Athletic and Tuesday night’s derby at Dover.
The manager will be hoping to have a full squad to select from, with plenty of bumps and bruises from Tuesday assessed this week. Midfielder Sam Blackman is now available for selection having served a 2 match ban while Jack Jebb continues to edge closer to a return to action.
From The Manager
Manager Andy Drury spoke on Friday afternoon:
“Tuesday was a good win for the boys They enjoyed it and the fans enjoyed it and it set down a real marker for where we want to be, but we have to move on quickly and back that performance up on Saturday at Wingate.
We expect to come up against a good side on Saturday. They reached the playoffs last season and got a good home win on the opening day of the season, so it should be another tough test for us to come away with a result. We want to come home with a positive result to take into a tough August Bank Holiday weekend with Cray Valley at home and a trip to Hastings on the Monday.”
Kit
Invicta will line up in our red & white shirts with red shorts and socks, our hosts in a dark blue home kit.
Previously
Invicta travelled to Wingate on the opening day of last season, coming home with a resounding 4-0 win thanks to a hat-trick from Ibrahim Olutade and a goal for David Smith.
Since being beaten twice at the Maurice Rebak Stadium in 2017, Invicta have had a near perfect record with 5 wins and a draw.
Invicta are unbeaten in the last 8 meetings between the clubs, Wingate’s last victory coming at Cheriton Road with a 1-0 win shortly before the first COVID-19 lockdown.
The Opposition
After finishing 4th last season, losing their playoff semi-final to eventual winners Enfield Town, Wingate & Finchley have begun this season with plenty of entertainment: a 3-2 win over Dulwich Hamlet followed by a 3-2 defeat to Carshalton Athletic on Monday night.
Invicta fans will recognise Wingate & Finchley’s left back, Toby Byron spent most of last season at the Alcaline Stadium before departing in the summer and heading to North London.
The Venue
The Maurice Rebak Stadium features a Grade two listed grandstand, which it the oldest cantilever stand still remaining in the UK.
The stadium has covered terraces behind one goal and along the far side of the pitch, but one end is uncovered so thankfully the forecast on Saturday is for sunshine.
Travel
Always check rail times/strike action before you travel.
The closest underground station to The Maurice Rebak stadium is West Finchley on the Northern Line, a 22 minute walk. Alternatively Woodstock Park is the next stop with the 383 bus taking you to the ground (alight at Granville Road).
