It was a familiar feeling for the travelling fans at Cheshunt on Saturday as a volley from Antonis Vasiliou consigned Invicta to defeat on Non-League Day 2025.
Invicta travelled to Theobolds Lane, a venue at which our last win came in a 2016 FA Trophy tie, off the back of last week’s 1-0 win over Whitehawk and opted for a similar system. Luke Allen’s absence saw the inclusion of Miquel Scarlett while Jonny Henly returned from suspension as the only change to the XI.
The first shot of the afternoon would prove to be the game’s deciding moment. With Invicta concerned about the threat of Darion Furlong’s long throw, the Cheshunt defender went short to Lordon Akolbire who had the time and space to deliver a dangerous cross from the right. A defensive header flicked the ball beyond the back post, but only as far as Vasiliou who thundered his volley into the roof of the net for his 3rd goal against Invicta this season.
Evans Kouassi fired over from the edge of the box but it was the hosts who came closest to adding to the scoring, Donell Thomas forced a save from the left leg of Henly before Dequane Wilson Braithwaite stung the Invicta keeper’s fingertips with a dipping effort from 25 yards.
The hosts lead 1-0 at the break but could have wrapped the game up quickly after the restart. Kenny Coker fired over from inside the box and Vasiliou from outside before captain Sam Granville managed to fire over from just a couple of yards out when it looked easier to score.
Invicta’s best chance of the afternoon fell to Dan Smith, the top-scorer heading over a Frankie Morgan cross from 6 yards out.
As Chehsunt looked to kill off the game, Vasiliou was denied by Henly from close range before Raul Da Silva headed wide at the near post from the resulting corner.
The Ambers saw the afternoon out in front of a season-high crowd of 669, leaving Invicta still waiting for that winning feeling at Cheshunt Stadium.
Invicta now turn attentions towards the visit of Chatham Town to the Alcaline Stadium on Saturday. Tickets are available online now.
