Invicta Pick-up A Good Point

On another dreadful day with gusting winds and squally showers, which at times seemed to be horizontal, Invicta picked up a point with a hard fought 1-1 draw at Carshalton Athletic to take away a  point from The War Memorial Sports Ground. We fielded the same side that started against Lewes last Saturday, except Sam Hasler replaced Micheal Everitt who was still feeling the effects of the kick he had received in that game.

Invicta kicked off and played against the wind in the first half and the game had a cagey start as both sides competed not only against each other but also the weather. ‘The Robins’ made the first chance when their leading scorer Ricky Korboa received the ball on the edge of the area, he slipped it through to Bobby Price and the full back’s low cross was deflected for a corner. There was however a delay in taking the kick as Olawaie Sogbanmu received lengthy treatment, following a tackle from Hasler minutes earlier, before being replaced by Ernold Haxhiu after just fifteen minutes. Our opponents then won a further corner, but this was headed clear by Josh Vincent for another, which was over-hit and the ball went out for a throw-in on the opposite side of the pitch.

Vincent then turned attacker and was fouled by Danny Dudley, but from the resultant free kick, Hasler blasted the ball high and wide. Korboa was then fouled by Vincent, who seemed to be involved at both ends, the free kick was punched clear by Henry Newcombe and when the ball was returned the Assistant Referee’s flag went up for offside. Ronnie Dolan then showed excellent control to bring the ball down and pass to Scott Heard, who seeing their goalkeeper, Kieton Perntreou, off his line shot from around 45 yards but it bounced wide. Hasler then saw another free kick from the edge of the area charged down and Ira Jackson’s long throw was cleared. Alfie Paxman and Kieron McCann were working well down the left hand side and they combined to allow McCann to send in a dangerous low cross which was cleared before an Invicta player could make contact. The resultant corner was also cleared, although there was concern as once the penalty area emptied, Matt Newman was left lying by the goal-line, thankfully after a couple of minutes he could continue.

Our opponents were also looking dangerous, especially on the break and from one such position substitute Haxhiu burst through but he got caught in two minds at to whether to shoot or pass which allowed Paxman, who seems to be growing into the left back position every week, to make an excellent tackle and snuff out the danger. Christie Pattisson was then played in but he ballooned the ball over the bar when well placed. As the home side got more into the game, the Invicta defence stood firm, but in the 39th minute they took the lead. Dangerous full back Price played the ball into Tommy Bradford on the edge of the area, and initially there didn’t appear to be any danger, but he did well to get between the two defenders and get his shot away past the unsighted Newcombe.

We almost replied immediately as having won a corner, Perntreou seemed deceived by the wind and punched the ball over his own bar for another corner, from which Hasler found Vincent at the far post, but he nodded just wide. However, ‘The Robins’ made two more chances, firstly Bradford sent in a dangerous free kick from the edge of the area and Hasler challenged Korboa in the six yard area which sent the ball goal-wards and Newcombe made a good save, then Price played in Bradford who slipped the ball to Korboa but he shot wide. That was the end of the first half action as our opponents went into the break with a 1-0 advantage, which on balance was just about deserved.

With the wind at our backs, Invicta needed to make a good start to the second half which we duly did. Heard passed the ball to McCann whose low cross was cleared for a corner from which Hasler took it short, received a return pass and shot from the edge of the area. The shot was deflected to Jerson Dos Santos who helped the ball into the net, to come back and haunt one of his former clubs just two days after Halloween!

The home side then started looking increasingly dangerous with Pattisson threatening on more than one occasion, firstly he ran onto a through ball and although he looked marginally offside, play continued and Vincent did well to clear the danger, then Newcombe made an excellent save from the same player and Korboa also went close as he slid in to meet a cross at the far post. Hasler was then cautioned for pulling back Haxhiu.

Jackson was then fouled on the edge of the area and Hasler saw his free kick well saved by the ‘The Robins’ goalkeeper for another corner which was cleared but as they threatened to break the Referee stopped the game as Price was laying injured in his own penalty area. Daniel Pappoe and Pattisson then combined well to give Haxhiu a shooting chance but his effort was easily saved by Newcombe. Korboa then got in a decent position and his low cross was deflected towards the goal by Newman and Newcombe pulled off a terrific reflex save.

The last twenty minutes saw the game become more open as both sets of players started to unsurprisingly tire due to the combination of the weather and the pace it was being played at. Korboa then found himself in another excellent position but his shot was charged down by a combination of Newcombe, who got the final touch, and Vincent for a corner. Dolan then saw his well struck shot from around twenty-five yards tipped over the bar by Perntreou.

In added time, Korboa had another effort cleared, McCann sent in another dangerous cross and Luke Read got booked for a foul on McCann, but the game ended 1-1 to give Invicta a valuable point at a ground where we had picked up only five points in six previous games. Both sides deserved the plaudits for supplying an entertaining game for an attendance just over the 500 mark.
