Next We Wander To Cray

                                      vs

After our hard fought 2-0 against Worthing on Saturday, we face another tricky game at Cray Wanderers on Wednesday. They have an impressive history and you’ll notice from their badge that they were formed in 1860, which makes them the oldest club in London and the second oldest in England, after Sheffield who were formed in 1857. Last season, the next chapter started when London Mayor Sadiq Khan finally gave them permission to build a new ground at Flamingo Park, which will at last give them a home, something they haven’t had since 1973, when they moved to  Oxford Road before then moving on to Hayes Lane, home of Bromley FC. It is hoped that the new Stadium will be open for the start of the 2021/22 season. On receiving the permission, the hard-working Cray Wanderers Chairman Gary Hillman said; “We couldn’t be more delighted with the tremendous news our application has the support of the Mayor, it has been a very long road to get to this point and a real team effort! “Yesterday’s news is a huge step towards securing the future of the club today and into the future”.

It was as if the news about the ground gave the whole club a boost, as last season they won the South East Division Championship in style, finishing eight points ahead of second placed Horsham, and so returning to the Premier Division after a five season absence. Their squad is similar to last season’s although they’ve brought in four players in goalkeeper Lewis Carey, midfield general Charlie Allen, and wide players Tom Murphy and Andre Coker. Like us they played eight pre-season games, winning six and losing the other two, scoring plenty of goals in the process, with former Invicta forward Joe Taylor leading the way with ten, although he did score five in one game at Whitstable Town!

On Saturday, in their first game back in the Premier Division for five seasons, they played at Hayden Bird’s new-look Kingstonian side and came away with a creditable 0-0 draw, against one of the more fancied sides.

Unsurprisingly after our fine performance and result on Saturday against Worthing, we will be travelling with the same squad that picked up the points.
