Looking Ahead to the 2019/20 Season - Part Three

This is the third and final part of the preview of the clubs in the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division for this season which covers Leatherhead to our first opponents Worthing.

After each team, I’ve shown the position they finished last season, the latest BetVictor odds for them to win the Title this season along with the opening odds so you can see which clubs are gaining support and which are going the other way, then at the end of each summary, the dates we are scheduled to play them, both Home (H) and Away (A), although these are of course subject to change.

Leatherhead (8th - Now 20/1, opened at 14/1)

Last season ‘The Tanners’ pushed for a Play-Off place for the majority of the season, and Manager Nicky Bull will be looking to go one step further this season.

Players in - Midfielders Calvin Ekpiteta (Aveley) and Charlie Hester-Cook (Woking, loan deal made permanent) plus striker Eddie Dsane (Maldon & Tiptree).

Players out - No information seen concerning outgoing players.

Fixture Dates - Sat 17th Aug ’19 (H) & Sat 21st Mar ’19 (A).

Lewes (11th - Now 16/1, opened at 14/1)

Another club who spent the majority of the season challenging for a Play-Off place before eventually    finishing in mid-table, they too will be looking for an improved performance under Manager Darren    Freeman.

Players in - Goalkeeper Billy Collings (Brighton & Hove Albion), defender Jason Dawson (Loxwood), defensive midfielder Zach Fagan (Farnborough Town), midfielders Bradley Wilson (Whyteleafe, where he was their Player of the Season last term), Stefan Ilic (Tooting & Mitcham United) and Kayne Diedrick-Roberts (Greenwich Borough), winger Dayshonne Golding (Hastings United, loan deal made permanent), and strikers Jordy Mongoy (Hastings United) and Dean Bown (Horsham YMCA).

Players out - Midfielder Nico Cotton (Haywards Heath Town), plus strikers Luke Blewden (Hythe Town) and Ben Pope (Hastings United).

Fixture Dates - Sat 25th Apr ’20 (H) & Sat 30th Nov ’19 (A).

Margate (12th - Now 10/1, opened at 14/1)

Last season they had a poor first half and were looking in danger of relegation, however in February,  Jay Saunders took over as Caretaker Manager and the club had a decent end-of-season run which saw them eventually finish in mid-table. After a bit of ‘toing and froing’ Jay eventually took the Manager’s job full-time and will be assisted by former ‘Gate’ Manager Mike Sandmann (who is also the Manager of the very successful Dover Athletic Academy Team) and former goalkeeper Craig Holloway who has been appointed Coach, so they could be one of the teams to watch this season, although they have got a much changed squad which may take time to gel.

Players in - Goalkeeper Jonathan Miles (Ebbsfleet United), defenders Jay Porter (Enfield Town) and       Daniel Johnson (Dartford, who has also played for England ‘C’), defender/midfielder Michael Abnett (Merstham), midfielders Adem Ramadan (Tonbridge Angels) and Connor Wilkins (Herne Bay), winger Kadell Daniel (Dover Athletic, loan deal made permanent), plus strikers Noel Leighton (Dagenham & Redbridge, loan deal made permanent), Jack Richards (Maidstone United) and Kudus Oyenuga (Welling United).

Players out - Goalkeeper Henry Newcombe (Folkestone Invicta), defenders Ben Fitchett (Hythe Town), Jack Paxman, Liam Friend and Tom Wynter (all Ramsgate) and Tom Mills (Sheppey United), midfielder Alex Brown (Hythe Town), utility player Connor Dymond (Welling United), plus strikers Frannie Collin and Sid Sollis (both Hythe Town, with Sollis being a loan deal made permanent) and Alex Flisher (Dartford).

Fixture Dates - Thu 26th Dec ’19 (H) & Mon 13th Apr ’20 (A).

Merstham (5th - Now 20/1, opened at 20/1)

Having lost Manager Haydon Bird to Kingstonian, Merstham have appointed former Tooting & Mitcham United Manager Frank Wilson, who ironically was coaching at ‘The Ks’ last season, to the ‘Moatsiders’ hot-seat. He certainly has a tough task to replicate last season as having pipped Invicta to the Play-offs in finishing 5th they lost 2-0 at Tonbridge Angels in the Premier Division Play-Off Final following an excellent 2-1 win at Carshalton Athletic in the Semi-Final. To assist him, Frank has brought in former Millwall, Leicester City, Fulham and Jamaica international Barry Hayles. As you will see Frank has also taken on a major rebuilding job, mainly because former Manager Hayden Bird took no less than nine players with him to Kingstonian! Unless stated the players leaving have gone to Kingstonian.

Players in - Goalkeeper Matte Pierson (Bedfont Sports), defenders Antonio Simeone, Peter Wedgeworth (both Tooting & Mitcham United), Fintan Walsh (Whitehawk), Sinn’Kaye Christie (Hastings United, although he had some time on loan at Whitehawk last season), James Richmond (Kingstonian), midfielders Brendan Ocran (Billericay Town, who also represented England ‘C’ in their tour of the Falkland Islands in the 2017/18 season), Ryan Palmer (Hythe Town), Eddie Dines (Tooting & Mitcham United) and Ollie Bennett (Sevenoaks Town), plus wingers Ellis Brown (Waltham Abbey, where he was the Player of the Year last season) and Christian Gitau Eneremadu (Lüneburger SK Hansa from Regionalliga Nord, which is the fourth tier in Germany).

Players out - Defenders Ben Harrison, Ollie Cook, Simon Cooper, Jake Hutchings (Braintree Town),         defender/midfielder Michael Abnett (Margate), midfielders Tom Kavanagh, Kenny Beaney, Gus Sow,      Fabio Saraiva, Dan Bennett, and strikers Calum Davies and Roman Michael-Percil (Braintree Town).

Fixture Dates - Mon 26th Aug ’19 (H) & Wed 1st Jan ’20 (A).

Potters Bar Town (16th - Now 33/1, opened at 25/1)

Last season, ‘The Scholars’ finished their first one in the Premier Division just below halfway, although their biggest issue was off the pitch with a race against time to get the ground up to the required standard to retain their Premier Division status, which thankfully they did. This season Lee O’Leary will be sole Manager (with assistance from John Mackie) as Scott Cousins, who was Joint Manager last season has stepped down, as they celebrate the 60th anniversary of their founding in 2020.

Players in - Goalkeeper Matt Nolan (Enfield Town), defender George Quarrington-Clark (Enfield Town) and midfielder George Craddock (Bishop’s Stortford).

Players out - Midfielder Serge Erkarslan (Harlow Town) and Sean Bonnett-Johnson (Braintree Town).

Fixture Dates - Sat 11th Apr ’20 (H) & Sat 24th Aug ’19 (A).

Wingate & Finchley (19th - Now 33/1, opened at 25/1)

A 4-2 win at home against Burgess Hill Town on the last day of the season saw ‘The Blues’ escape  relegation as they finished fourth from bottom, two points ahead of Whitehawk, who went down. For the forthcoming season they have appointed Steve Clarke as Manager and he will be joined on the bench by Assistant Danny Foster, whilst Dave Norman, who took the hot-seat last season and guided ‘The Blues’ to safety, will take on the role of Technical Director.

Players in - No information seen concerning incoming players.

Players out - Defender Ola Williams (unknown) and forward Reece Beckles-Richards (Wealdstone).

Fixture Dates - Sat 22nd Feb ’19 (H) & Sat 28th Sep ’19 (A).

Worthing (9th - Now 16/1, opened at 14/1)

Another side who were challenging for a Play-Off place for the majority of last season before eventually finishing mid-table. Expect more of the same this season from another excellent footballing side, under their experienced Manager Adam Hinshelwood. They will certainly give us a testing time on the opening day of the season.

Players in - Goalkeepers Carl Rushworth and Roco Reeves (both from Brighton & Hove Albion with the former on a season’s loan and the latter on work experience), defenders Joe Tennent (Three Bridges, where he won the Young Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year Awards last season) and Cameron Tutt (Brighton & Hove Albion, although he had a loan spell at Haywards Heath Town last season), attacking midfielder Marvin Armstrong (Whyteleafe) and strikers Lloyd Dawes (Eastbourne Borough) and Threece Myles-Meekams (Bromley, although he was on loan at ‘The Mackarel Men’ for a spell last season and he actually scored the winner for them against Folkestone Invicta in our 3-2 defeat at Woodside Road in November), Ben Mendoza (who has returned to Sussex having been on a football scholarship at the University of Rio Grande in the US, although he started his career with Bognor Regis Town Under 18s), Mason Doughty (Three Bridges) and Shola Ayoola (Three Bridges, although prior to that he was at Stoke City, where he also won Republic of Ireland Under 18s Caps, before his release last June at the same time as Steve Ireland).

Players out - Goalkeeper Lucas Covolan Cavagnari (Torquay United), defender James Crane (Bognor Regis Town), midfielder Kwame Poku (Colchester United) and strikers Hayden Skerry (South Park, loan deal made permanent) and last season’s leading scorer Peter Ajiboye (Sutton United).

Fixture Dates - Sat 10th Aug ’19 (H) & Sat 15th Feb ’20 (A).
