NEW MAN IS AN OLD FRIEND AS MATT RETURNS TO THE FULLICKS STADIUM

Matt Newman has returned to Folkestone Invicta from neighbours Hythe Town and will be in the squad for their trip to Enfield Town as the Bostik Premier Division season starts tomorrow.

Manager Neil Cugley said: “It wasn’t working out for him as well as he would have liked at Hythe and he’s just the kind of versatile player who can do a job for us at the moment.

“As we well know, he can play sweeper or a conventional centre half role or holding midfielder – and likes to get forward to make or score or goal or two at times.”

Cugs added: “He’s a really nice guy as well and knows our set-up well, of course.”

The return of the 29-year-old who spent three seasons at the Fullicks Stadium also gives Invicta more time in their bid to bring in a defender on loan to help the club through the always hectic first few months of the season.

Neil said: “The lad I’m after was in his club’s first team squad on Tuesday and, depending on their injury situation may be again tomorrow.

“It’s something I’m keen to pursue and we will be watching the situation closely. If all goes well, we may be able to finalise that arrangement in the next couple of weeks.”

The boss is not 100 per cent decided on what role Newman will be given tomorrow but it may well be either alongside Callum Davies at the back, with Kwabs Osei pushing forward into midfield, or in place of Micheal Everitt in the middle of the park.

Reaction

Everitt and fullback Josh Vincent both picked up knocks in Folkestone’s final warm-up game against Thamesmead both trained last night (Thursday), and barring any reaction to those injuries, could be in contention for a place in the starting line-up tomorrow.

“JV should be okay but we’ll see how Mev is tomorrow. We’ve got eight games in the next four weeks so we may need everyone we’ve got during that period.”

Last season’s leading scorer Joe Taylor, who made a big impact as a second half substitute in the 3-1 defeat at Enfield’s Queen Elizabeth Stadium last Easter Saturday, also joined in  light training last night but it highly unlikely to start tomorrow with a view to a return, perhaps over the August Bank Holiday.

* Invicta will be wearing their new red away strip for the first time tomorrow and for the next few away games apart for the Kent Senior Cup tie at Hythe on August 22nd.

*Matt Newman first joined Folkestone from Chatham Town  in the 2012/13 season and has been involved in 165 for the club – 138 starts and 27 games from the bench.

He was a member of the Championship winning 2015/16 squad, leaving to join Hythe some 10 months ago.
