We Start With A Trip To ‘The Rams'

                         vs

Our first game, in what will a set of pre-season fixtures played in environments never seen before, sees us visit the Southwood Stadium to take on South East Division Ramsgate on Saturday. When the last season ended prematurely they were 18th with twenty points from thirty games, which had led to the former East Grinstead Town boss, Matt Longhurst, taking over the managerial hot-seat at the turn of the year.

As with last summer, ‘The Rams’ have once again been busy recruiting players for the forthcoming season. They’ve brought in goalkeeper Brannon Daly from East Grinstead Town, who teams up again with his old boss, having previously played for Merstham, with whom he won the Isthmian League South Division, Metropolitan Police, Kingstonian and Walton Casuals. Defenders Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson and Abdul Salami from Ashford United, Maidstone United and Brentwood respectively. Wilson has previously played for Hythe Town and Sevenoaks Town, reaching the Isthmian League play-offs with the former, plus Corinthian, Erith & Belvedere and East Grinstead Town, Johnson has also played at Hythe Town as well as Welling United and Boreham Wood, whilst Salami was the former Southend United Under 18s Captain.

Further up the pitch, midfielder Lee Prescott has signed from Ashford United having previously played for Margate and Cray Wanderers, whilst sixteen year old Riley Twyman, also a midfielder, has been promoted to the First Team squad, having been with the club since the age of five, he must be due a testimonial! Up-front they’ve signed another youngster in the form of highly-rated seventeen year old George Nikaj, who has scored over fifty goals a season for the past three seasons whilst at Dover Athletic having previously been with Charlton Athletic Youth Academy, which he had to leave when ‘The Addicks’ brought in a rule that players had to be within a certain distance of their training ground. Rory Smith, who played a couple of pre-season games for Invicta at the start of last season and won our ‘Man of the Match’ Award in the Sid Burvill Trophy game, has also returned to the club having had a spell in Australia with Redlands United.

Apart from Smith they have other former Invicta players in their squad, namely defender/midfielder Phil Starkey plus forwards Ashley Miller and Kane Rowland.

Speaking on Twitter, the Ramsgate Manager, Matt Longhurst, looked forward to the game saying; “It’s a tough fixture to start with after what has been quite a long break, I’ve spoken to Neil Cugley and he said he’ll be bringing over the First Team squad which has been a settled group over the past few seasons. “I’ll have a squad of nineteen or twenty players, so they can all get game time as we could be in the F.A. Cup in just a month’s time. It’s obviously a shame that the supporters won’t be there with us, but that is unavoidable to the moment. “I’m just happy that on Sunday, I’ll finally have a game to look back on from the previous day!”.

I spoke to Neil, and I suggested that it’ll be an unusual atmosphere on Saturday, he agreed, saying;  “I always look forward to going to Ramsgate, it’s always a good place to visit, but I’m sure it’s going to very different this time and I’m obviously disappointed that we won’t have our supporters with us. “Having trained for the past couple of Saturdays, the players are all looking forward to a game. ”Most of the squad are available, so I’ll be taking fifteen or sixteen players over to Ramsgate. “There’s no doubt it’ll be strange but we’ll see how it goes”.

We visited ‘The Rams’ last pre-season and came away with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a Johan Ter Horst’s 58th minute goal. The teams on that day were;

Ramsgate; Luke Watkins, Dan Carrington (Mikey Dalton, 46 mins), Tom Wynter, Ollie Gray (Captain), Dan Fleming (Rob Saunders, 46 mins), George Monger (William Johnson-Cole, 46 mins), Tom Chapman (Matty Robinson, 46 mins), Trialist (Josh Oliver, 67 mins), Kane Rowland , Miles Cornwell (Ashley Miller, 61 mins) & Gil Carvalho (Leo Mazzone, 46 mins) (Sub not used; Will Godman).
