‘The Angels' Now To Visit The BuildKent Stadium

                                         vs

This Tuesday, as a precursor to next Saturday’s big game at Worthing, we are playing Vanarama National League South Tonbridge Angels in the Kent Reliance Kent Senior Cup Second Round, but don’t forget due to their ongoing ground issues the tie has been switched and will now be played at the BuildKent Stadium, kick-off 7:45pm. In the First Round we defeated Hythe Town 5-1 at the BuildKent Stadium with goals from Josh Vincent and Johan Ter Horst, who got two apiece plus one from Sam Hasler, whilst ‘The Angels’ had a bye due to them now being at Step Two in the Non-League ‘Pyramid’, so it is their first game in this season’s competition.

Because in theory Tonbridge are the home side, they have set the admission prices as; Adult (18 and over), £10.00, with concessions (65 and over) £5.00 and  Youths and Juniors (Under 17), £4.00.

The game will be decided on the night and if the scores are level after ninety minutes, the game will go straight to penalties, there won’t be extra time. The eventual winners of the tie will be away at Vanarama National League South Dartford in the Quarter Finals, the full Quarter Final draw is as follows;

Tonbridge Angels had a fantastic season last time out, as they gained promotion from the Isthmian League Premier Division having won two Play-Off Finals in what was an unprecedented end-of-season finish due to the ‘Pyramid’ reorganisation. They first won the Isthmian League Premier Division Play-Off by beating Merstham 2-0 at home in the Final having won 2-1 at Haringey Borough in the Semi-Final. They then went to Metropolitan Police, who had won the Southern League Premier Division South, and came away with an excellent 3-2 victory after extra time to finally earn promotion to the Vanarama National League South.

They are finding life at the higher level a bit tougher, although that would appear to reflect the higher standard of the League and the fact they are taking a while to adjust to it. Having seen them a couple of times this season, they would definitely be there or thereabouts if they were still in the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division. In fact their form has picked up recently and in their last five games they’ve only lost one, winning two and drawing two, although they are still in the relegation zone but with a number of games in hand.

Did You Know?

We have never lost to Tonbridge Angels in the Kent Senior Cup, although we’ve only played them twice! In the 2001/2 season we won 2-1 at home in the First Round before going out by the same score at home to Margate, and then in 2005/06 we defeated them 2-0 at home in the First Round before, coincidentally, losing 2-1 at Margate in the next Round.

And What About Us?

Looking forward to the game, Neil Cugley said; “With the Worthing game next Saturday, it may have been good to have had a free week, however, after Saturday’s game I pleased that we can get back on the field against what will be a strong Tonbridge Angels side as their pitch concerns have led to them not having many games and then to make matters worse their opponents last Saturday, Chelmsford City, were in the F.A. Trophy. “Our squad for the game will be similar to Saturday’s, although Callum [Davies] will return to the squad after his suspension, but JV [Josh Vincent] is unavailable. Henry [Newcombe] will have a game in goal and I’m hoping to give Tyler [Sterling] more minutes as he gets used to being part of the First Team squad.”
