Up for the Cup!

                                      vs

On Saturday we make the short visit to the Belmont Ground to play our old friends Whitstable Town in the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates F.A. Cup. If the game ends level after ninety minutes the replay will be at the BuildKent Stadium on the following Tuesday, kick-off 7:45pm. The eventual winners of the tie will receive £4,500.00 and the losers will get £1,500.00

Last season ‘The Oystermen’ finished in mid-table in the BetVictor Isthmian League South-East Division and during the summer former Invicta player Lloyd Blackman took over the managerial seat from another former Invicta player Scott Porter. So far this season they’ve had mixed results, beating Herne Bay 3-0 and drawing 1-1 against Sittingbourne at home, and losing both their away matches, 2-0 at Hythe Town and 4-0 at Sevenoaks Town. In the Preliminary Round of the Emirates F.A. Cup they won 3-1 at home against Newhaven of the Sussex County Football League Premier Division which nowadays contains former Isthmian League clubs such as Eastbourne Town, Peacehaven & Telscombe and Crawley Down Gatwick.

From the Managers

Both Managers are looking forward to the game with Lloyd Blackman, who lives in Folkestone saying;” I messaged Cugs straight after the draw and we had smiley faces on our text messages! “Folkestone have been a fantastic side and it’s arguably one of the tougher draws we could have asked for. “It will be a great day, a fantastic occasion, and we’ve earned the right to be there as well. “We played them in pre-season, we probably know more about Folkestone than some of the other clubs and with my background, and living in Folkestone, it’s a special occasion. “It’s one we’ll go into aware of the magnitude of the task but one where they’ll come to us and we’ll do our best to hopefully get a shock result.”

In reply Neil mentioned; “I like Lloyd, he’s a good man and he’s changed their style of play, they try to play football the right way and you’ve got to give them credit for that”. With it being fourteen years since Invicta last played in the First Round Proper, he added; “I’m getting older and I’d like to have one more day out, I hope it’s this year and we’ll do our best. “We had the trip up to Chester when they were in the League and that was great fun. “Somebody will do it, all credit to Haringey they had a good run last year reaching the First Round Proper and they are in our League, there’s somebody in our League that does quite well every year in the F.A. Cup and I hope it’s us”.

Looking ahead to Saturday, he said; “There were a few players with minor knocks at training, I think Abi was the busiest person last night! However, I’m expecting the majority to be fit with perhaps only a couple missing, one of whom is Ian Draycott who is still waiting for an update on his fractured wrist, so, we’ll go to Whitstable with a strong squad”.

Not that it will have much, if any, bearing on Saturday’s game, we did of course play Whitstable Town during pre-season for the Sid Burvill Trophy and won 3-1, with goals from Ira Jackson, Kieron McCann and Callum Davies, whilst Tarik Ibrahim replied for our opponents. The two teams that day were;

Folkestone Invicta; Tim Roberts (Joe Coleman, 88 mins), Josh Vincent, Nat Blanks (Finn O’Mara, 46 mins), Matt Newman, Callum Davies (Captain), Micheal Everitt (Charlie Dickens, 72 mins), Scott Heard (Sam Hasler, 46 mins), Ira Jackson, Jerson Dos Santos (Trialist, 72 mins), Rory Smith (Lewis Heard, 81 mins) & Kieron McCann (Johan Ter Horst, 46 mins).

Whitstable Town; Henry Newcombe, Jake Mackenzie, John Walker (James Trueman, 81 mins), Connor Sanders, Tom Bryant (Captain), Liam Dickson (George Ede, 55 mins), Liam Gillies, Ossie Proni, Marcus Elliott (Owen Fitts, 84 mins), Tarik Ibrahim (Muhammed Cham, 84 mins).

Don’t expect too many changes from either side for Saturday’s game, although Herny Newcombe will  be wearing Invicta colours this time of course! The Whitstable Town squad contains three former Invicta players in skipper Tom Bryant, Liam Dickson and John Walker, who kindly scored his season’s goal against Herne Bay on Bank Holiday Monday! On the Invicta side Henry Newcombe, Scott Heard, Micheal Everitt and Ira Jackson have all previously played for ‘The Oystermen’.

Recent F.A. Cup Results

Both sides are due a run in the F.A. Cup as neither has had much of one in the last five years except for the 2017/18 season when Invicta reached the Fourth Qualifying Round.
