Looking Ahead to the 2019/20 Season - Part Two

This is the second part of the preview looking at the teams in the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division and covers Cray Wanderers to Kingstonian.

Again after each team, I’ve shown the position they finished last season, the latest BetVictor odds for them to win the Title this season along with the opening odds so you can see which clubs are gaining support and which are going the other way, then at the end of each summary, the dates we are scheduled to play them, both Home (H) and Away (A), although these are of course subject to change.

Cray Wanderers (Promoted as South-East Division Champions - Now 16/1, opened at 16/1)

Due to them currently ground-sharing at Bromley and playing a number of games on Sundays, I saw ‘The Wands’ a few times last season and they looked a very good footballing side. So it was no surprise, under the astute  managership of Tony Russell, that they won their Division, finishing eight points above second-placed Horsham, and they should do well in the higher Division. Off the field, they also had excellent news last season, as they finally got the planning permission to build their new ground at Flamingo Park, which will continue to give them a boost and is a testament to the hard work over the years of Chairman Gary Hillman.

Players in - Goalkeeper Lewis Carey (Lewes), midfielder Charlie Allen (Dulwich Hamlet, who is part of the famous Allen football dynasty and is the son of former QPR player Martin Allen), winger Andre Coker (Maidstone United, although he spent most of last season on loan at Dartford) and striker Tom Murphy (Dartford, but he played on loan at both Margate and Tonbridge Angels last season).

Players out - Goalkeeper Nick Blue (Glebe), defenders Marcus Evans (Whitstable Town) and Archie       Johnson (who returns to Welling United, where he started last season), midfielder Sean Roberts          (unknown) and striker Junior Dadson (Barking).

Fixture Dates - Tue 18th Feb ’20 (H) & Wed 14th Aug ’19 (A).

East Thurrock United (Relegated from Vanarama National League South Division - Now 20/1, opened at 10/1)

Managed by long serving John Coventry (he was appointed Manager in October 2007 which                     coincidentally was the last season we played them), ‘The Rocks’ were relegated from the Vanarama     National League South having finished second from bottom, so will looking to make a swift return.

Players in - Defenders Jordan Brown (Concord Rangers) and Morishi Gelshvilli (Brightlingsea Regent), plus midfielder Alex Clark (Harlow Town).

Players out - Defenders Ashley Miller (Grays Athletic) and Rickie Hayles (Hornchurch), midfielder Jon Nzengo (unknown) plus striker and last season’s leading scorer Sam Higgins (Chelmsford City).

Fixture Dates - Tue 22nd Oct ’19 (H) & Sat 1st Feb ’20 (A).

Enfield Town (10th - Now 16/1, opened at 16/1)

Last season ‘The Towners’ had a mixed season, probably finishing lower than they had hoped in the League Table, but having the consolation of winning the Alan Turvey Trophy (sponsored by Velocity) with a 2-0 victory over AFC Hornchurch in the Final at Aveley. Andy Leese will continue as Manager and they’ll also be looking for an improved League position this time out and should be in with a shout of the Play-Offs.

Players in - Goalkeeper Nathan McDonald (Chelmsford City), defenders Jon Muleba (Kingstonian) and Joe Payne (Barnet, loan deal made permanent), defensive/midfielder Scott Thomas (Boreham Wood/Royston duel registration), winger James Potton (Royston) and Sam Bantick (Aveley).

Players out - Goalkeepers Joe Wright (Hornchurch) and Matt Nolan (Potters Bar Town), defenders Mickey Parcell (Hornchurch), Jay Porter (Margate) and George Quarrington-Clark (Potters Bar Town), plus midfielders Matt Johnson (Hornchurch), Aaron Greene (unknown), James Mulley (Bracknell Town) and Sam Chaney (work commitments).

Fixture Dates - Sat 7th Mar ’20 (H) & Sat 16th Nov ’19 (A).

Folkestone Invicta (6th - Now 12/1, opened at 10/1)

Its as you were at The Fullick’s Stadium, Neil Cugley will be in charge for his 23rd season and will be        assisted by Roland Edge and Micheal Everitt. After just missing out on the Play-Offs last season, Invicta will be looking to go one better this season, with almost the same squad.

Players in - Goalkeeper Henry Newcombe (Margate, although he was also on loan Hythe Town last season), and attacking midfielder/striker Jerson Dos Santos (Carshalton Athletic, although he was on loan at East Grinstead Town for the second half of last season).

Players out - Goalkeeper Nick Shaw (retired) and striker Ade Yusuff (Dulwich Hamlet).

Fixture Dates - N/A

Haringey Borough (3rd - Now 12/1, opened at 10/1)

This season the club and Manager Tom Loizou will be looking to kick on having lost 2-1 at home against Tonbridge Angels in the Play-Off Semi-Finals. Last season, they also reached the F.A. Cup First Round for the first time in their history, before going out in unfortunate circumstances, losing 1-0 at home against AFC Wimbledon with a last minute deflected goal in front of the ‘Match of the Day’ cameras. I understand they’ve had a number of comings and goings, but the only ones I’ve seen mentioned are below, and details are a bit sketchy.

Players in - Defender Stelios Demetriou, Ezekiel Bedemosi, Olu Durojaiye plus strikers Chid Onokwai and Paris Panagiotou (all previous clubs unknown).

Players out - Defender Oliver Finch (Harlow Town) and striker Kudus Oyengua (Welling United).

Fixture Dates - Sat 23rd Nov ’19 (H) & Sat 18th Apr ’20 (A).

Hornchurch (15th - Now 4/1 favourites, opened at 16/1)

For this season the club have gone back to the Hornchurch name from AFC Hornchurch. Colin McBride continues to be in charge, they too will be looking to improve on last season’s League position and they are currently favourites to win the Title.

Players in - Goalkeeper Joe Wright (Enfield Town), defenders Mickey Parcell (Enfield Town), Arthur Lee (Tonbridge Angels) and Rickie Hayles (East Thurrock United), midfielder Matt Johnson (Enfield Town) and strikers Chris Dickson (Hampton & Richmond Borough, who has also won international caps for Ghana) and Daniel Uchechi (also Hampton & Richmond Borough, who has also earned international caps, this time for Nigeria at Under 20 and Under 23 levels).

Players out - Goalkeeper Callum Chafer (Bowers & Pitsea), defender and Supporters’ Player of the      Season Alex Bentley (Tonbridge Angels), defender Kenzer Lee (Bowers & Pitsea), midfielder Jed Chouman (Barking, although he didn’t play last season) and strikers Sean Marks (AFC Sudbury), George Purcell (Canvey Island), Theo Fairweather-Johnson (Barking, having spent the latter part of last season on loan at Greenwich Borough) and Glenn Wilson (unknown).

Fixture Dates - Sat 11th Jan ’20 (H) & Tue 1st Oct ’19 (A).

Horsham (Promoted as South-East Division Play-Off Winners - Now 20/1, opened at 20/1)

Manager Dom Di Paola will be looking for a good season having guided 'The Hornets' to promotion from the South East Division via the Play-Offs, when they beat Heywards Heath 3-0 in the Semi-Final and Ashford United 2-1 in the Final, both at home. Looking forward to visiting their impressive looking new ground this season, which has been renamed The Camping World Community Stadium, and will no doubt give the club extra incentive to do well.

Players in - Goalkeeper Josh James (Burgess Hill Town), defender Harry Mills (Walton Casuals), midfielders Jared Rance (also Burgess Hill Town), Lea Dawson (Cray Valley PM) and Alex Kelly (Walton Casuals) plus strikers Zack Newton (Welling United) and Malachi Hudson (VCD Athletic).

Players out - Goalkeeper Josh Pelling (Sheppey United), defender Joey Taylor (unknown), winger     Tyrell Richardson-Brown (Sevenoaks Town) and James McElligott (unknown).

Fixture Dates - Sat 7th Dec ’19 (H) & Sat 31st Aug ’19 (A).

Kingstonian (18th - Now 12/1, opened at 8/1 joint favourites)

Last season ‘The Ks’ had a disappointing season, picking up just four points from the last four months of the season (fifteen games) and so flirted with relegation for a fair part of it. Therefore, for this season they have appointed former Merstham Manager Hayden Bird to replace Caretaker Manager Kim Harris, who was recently awarded a Life Membership at the club for his extraordinary service over the years, and it will be interesting to see how he fares. Although they should show a marked improvement on last term, even if it takes a while for the side to settle in having virtually a new squad, but with nine players coming from Merstham that should help! Hayden has also brought Tutu Henriques (who will be Assistant Manager), Kevin D’Arcy (Coach) and Ryan Valentine (Physiotherapist) with him from his former club. On the list below, any incoming players have come from Merstham unless stated.

Players in - Defenders Jerry Puemo (Farnborough Town), Ben Harrison, Ollie Cook, Simon Cooper,       midfielders Tom Kavanagh, Kenny Beaney, Gus Sow, Fabio Saraiva, Dan Bennett, Reece Hall (Dorking Wanderers) and strikers Calum Davies, Youssef Bamba (Walton Casuals), Dan Hector (Whyteleafe) and Dan Thompson (Dulwich Hamlet). The players that have been retained from last season’s squad are Rob Tolfrey, Sean Clohessy, Leo Chambers, David Fitzpatrick, Dean Inman and Louie Theophanous.

Players out - It would appear that the majority of last season’s squad has left, apart from the six  above, although the only ones I’ve seen mentioned are defenders Jon Muleba (Enfield Town) and Dean Inman (Hampton & Richmond Borough), plus midfielder Aaron Lamont (Braintree Town).

Fixture Dates - Sat 9th Nov ’19 (H) & Sat 14th Mar ’20 (A).
