Twenty-year-old former QPR striker Ben Pattie has signed for Invicta – initially on a short term basis and could well be in the starting eleven for Saturday’s opening Ryman Premier Division game against Harrow Borough at the Fullicks Stadium.

Pattie grabbed both goals in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Hythe Town as Neil Cugley’s side ended their pre-season programme in far more positive fashion than might have been expected with half a dozen first choice players missing.

“Ben came down and trained with us last night” said the Folkestone manager. “He’s not really done too much pre-season training because of a broken hand but I’m sure that he will play some part against Harrow.

“Rooky (Carl) is definitely out with a shin problem he picked up at Sittingbourne a few weeks ago and Jonny Pilbeam is doubtful after collecting  a knock at Hythe. But the young lads who came in all did well and Euhan (Sahadow) is in what I feel is a very strong squad of 16 for Saturday.

“I can’t really complain about pre-season injuries – I was talking to the Faversham manager (Ray Turner) earlier on today and he’s got six men doubtful for their opening game at Walton Casuals on Saturday.

“Harrow have done well to stay in the Premier Division all the while that we’ve been out of it. We know a fair bit about most of their players.

“And Staines (who Folkestone visit on Tuesday) will, I believe, do better than they did last season. They’ve got a good set-up and a really nice ground up there.

“I’m really excited about getting started now" added Cugley (left) We’ve said all along that we’d give the lads that won the league for us a chance to see what they can achieve in the Premier Division and by and large we’re going to do that.

“Sam Beale was back in training for us last night and with the new lad in the squad I’m looking forward to seeing how things go.

“We’ll work on set pieces and a few other little things tomorrow.

“But we are still talking to a couple more players and may bring someone else in within the next week or two. You’ve always got to have a Plan B, but as long as we do okay in these first few weeks, let’s hope that we don’t have to come up with Plan C as well!”

Possible Invicta squad: Roberts, Vincent, Blanks, Friend, Chappell, Dolan, Beal, Starkey, Wright, Heard, Draycott, Pattie, Newman, Miller, Sahadow, Chalmers-Stevens
