2018/19 Play-Offs Updated

The majority of the Play-Off Semi-Finals have now been played, I went to the games at Hastings United (where oddly I thought I saw the German Comedy Ambassador to the UK, Henning Wehn or if not it was someone who looked very much like him!), Cheshunt and Aveley (more like it for a Play-Off, three sent off!), I then had a break from the Play-Offs for the KitToFit Kent Youth League Cup Final on  Thursday! So, just the Finals to go!

Hopefully things are now becoming clearer! Here are the Semi-Final results plus the line-ups for the Finals as far as is possible, however, the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Central Division Semi-Final Play-Offs are now being played on Sunday 5th May with the Final on Wednesday 8th May as an investigation was carried out concerning whether Stratford Town had fielded an ineligible player during their League schedule. They were found guilty but only had three points deducted, so they retained 5th place and will compete in the Play-Off Semi-Finals. Please note, these are the dates at the time of writing, they’ve changed four times since last Tuesday!!

SUPER PLAY-OFF FINALS

Saturday 13th May

It has been decided that the Super Play-Offs will be played between the following Divisional winners;

Bostik League Premier Division P/O Winners vs Evo-Stik SL Premier South Division P/O Winners

Evo-Stik SL Premier Central Division P/O Winners vs Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division P/O Winners.

So, looking at the teams that have qualified for the Finals and their PPG records, based on the above, the Super Play-Off Finals will be;

Metropolitan Police (1.857)/Poole Town (1.667) vs Tonbridge Angels (1.667)/Merstham (1.667)

Despite the PPG average of three of the teams in the Play-Off being the same, the Bostik League club will be away as Tonbridge Angels and Merstham have got Goal Differences of +13 and +10 respectively whilst Poole Town’s is +25, and Metropolitan Police have a better PPG anyway.

South Shields (2.175)/Warrington Town (2.100) vs Evo-Stik SL Premier Central Division P/O Winners

In the other game, the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side will be at home as the PPG totals for both South Shields and Warrington Town are higher than any of the four clubs that could still qualify from the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Central Division.

Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South Division

Yate Town (1.974)                            vs            Cinderford Town (1.868)

The PPG totals for the fourteen Finalists are as follows (with Goal Difference in brackets if needed);

Bromsgrove Sporting      SLD1C                   2.289                    (+64)

Malden & Tiptree             ILN                         2.079                    (+40)

Horsham                              ILSE                        2.056                    (+35)

Bracknell Town                  ILSC                        2.026                    (+53)

Corby Town                        SLD1C                   2.026                    (+46)

Pontefract Collieries         NPLE                      2.000                    (+37)

Cheshunt                             ILSC                        2.000                    (+36)

Radcliffe FC                         NPLW                    1.974                    (+39)

Yate Town                            SLD1S                    1.974                    (+23)

Leek Town                           NPLW                    1.947                    (+44)

Heybridge Swifts              ILN                         1.947                    (+19)

Ashford United                  ILSE                        1.889                    (+38)

Brighouse Town                NPLE                      1.868                    (+31)

Cinderford Town               SLD1S                    1.868                    (+25)

Therefore, looking at the Finalists, what does this all mean? I think it’s the below;

  • If  Bromsgrove Sporting, Malden & Tiptree, Horsham, Bracknell Town, Corby Town, Pontefract Collieries or Cheshunt win their Play-Off Final they will be promoted
  • If Radcliffe FC win their Play-Off Final, one of Ashford United, Brighouse Town or Heybridge Swifts also have to win their Play-Off Final for them to be promoted
  • If Yate Town win their Play-Off Final, two of Ashford United, Brighouse Town, Leek Town or Heybridge Swifts also have to win their Play-Off Final for them to be promoted
  • If Leek Town win their Play-Off Final, two of Ashford United, Brighouse Town, Heybridge Swifts or Cinderford Town also have to win their Play-Off Final for them to be promoted
  • If Heybridge Swifts win their Play-Off Final, two of Ashford United, Brighouse Town, or Cinderford Town also have to win their Play-Off Final for them to be promoted
  • If Ashford United win their Play-Off Final, both Brighouse Town and Cinderford Town also have to win their Play-Off Final for them to be promoted
  • Brighouse Town and Cinderford Town can’t be promoted even if they win their Play-Off Final as their PPG totals are too low.

Of the sides who could be promoted within the Bostik League, Malden & Tiptree or Heybridge Swifts (North Division), plus Horsham or Ashford United (South-East Division) would be likely to come up to the Premier Division. If Bracknell Town (South Central Division) win their Play-Off, they will probably be promoted to the Evo-Stik Southern League South Premier, whereas if their opponents Cheshunt (South Central Division) win, they may be placed in the Bostik League Premier Division.

However, as I’ve mentioned before, it’s important to remember that a number of clubs around ‘The Pyramid’ may get a reprieve (or indeed be relegated) for one reason or another, at the time of writing their are a number of clubs that are facing uncertainty or have possible issues concerning promotion, so things won’t be finalised until the relevant Leagues have agreed the constitutions at their Annual General Meetings (scheduled for June).

I’ll do a further update once all the Finals have been played, the majority are on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6th.
