RAMSGATE                                     3

FOLKESTONE INVICTA                2

Folkestone Invicta were beaten 3-2 away to Ramsgate despite taking the lead twice at a sunny Southwood in Saturday’s pre-season friendly.

Harry Stannard scored what turned out to be the winning goal early in the second half after Sam Lawford had equalised for Lloyd Blackman’s side just before the interval.

Johan Ter Horst and Ade Yuusff had earlier put Invicta ahead after side of George Crimmen scoring Ramsgate’s first equaliser.

The Folkestone side had goalkeeper Nick Shaw making his first start of the summer against one of his former clubs and youth team striker Tom Walmsley also getting a first senior start.

This game was set up as part of the deal that took Alfie Paxman to Invicta during the summer after he was top goalscorer for Ramsgate last season. The new Invicta signing was soon involved as he found Yusuff within the opening minute and the latter cut in from the left and shot into the side netting.

At the other end, Billy Munday shot from 35 yards out in the ninth minute but was well off target.

Munday then found Lawford on the left hand side two minutes later and the ball in from the left deflected to Shaw.

For Invicta, Kieron McCann found Paxman on the left and the cross was headed wide by Yusuff.

Kyran Lightfoot took the game’s first corner from the right hand side in the 14th minute that fell to Charlie Dickens on the edge of the box but Shaw made a good save to keep out the subsequent deflected shot for a second corner, this time from the left hand side but also taken by Lightfoot.

Jack Evans found Yusuff on the quarter of an hour mark and the latter’s ball in struck Crimmen on the hand as the visitors gained a free kick on the right hand edge of the penalty area.

Invicta opened the scoring in the 19th minute following a foul by defender Crimmen on striker Yusuff. Evans took a quick free kick to Paxman who cut in from the left hand side and saw his shot come back off the post and out to TER HORST who adjusted his feet to find the net.

Ramsgate responded as a corner from the right a minute later came out to Lawford who didn’t get hold of his shot cleanly and was off target.

The home side was level in the 21st minute when a Lightfoot corner from the left was met by a powerful header from home captain CRIMMEN at the far post.

Ter Horst then received a Yusuff throw in and showed trickery down the right hand side and his ball in was put out by George Batney for Invicta’s first corner of the afternoon ahead of the game’s first drinks break.

Invicta were close in the 27th minute when Yusuff did well after receiving the ball on the right from captain Callum Davies and home goalkeeper Luke Watkins initially appeared to have claimed the ball before letting it slip to give Walmsley an opening virtually on the line but after a goalmouth scramble Watkins eventually got hold of it.

Ter Horst then played a one-two with Yusuff a minute later but Watkins came out to save with his legs.

Invicta went ahead again in the 30th minute when a Josh Vincent throw in from the right reached Walmsley who found YUSUFF on the right hand side of the box and the striker drilled a powerful sot through Watkins’ legs.

The visitors threatened again three minutes later when Yusuff played the ball to Vincent whose good delivery from the right hand side was headed over by Walmsley.

Munday hit a good 39th minute strike from outside the penalty area that was touched over the crossbar well by Shaw for another home corner.  Crimmen headed the subsequent set piece back across goal and Munday poked his shot wide.

It was 2-2 in the 44th minute when Stannard played a great ball forward that was met by an even better first touch from LAWFORD who slotted a low shot past Shaw from the left and side of the box.

Ramsgate then went ahead when they struck again soon after the other side of half time as Lawford broke down the right hand side and played the ball back to STANNARD who swept his shot in.

In Lawford Ramsgate appear to have a ready-made replacement for Paxman and this was the former’s day.

Tijan Jadama found Munday down the right in the 54th minute who played Jadama in but Shaw came out to save.

A 59th minute Paxman ball down the left just evaded Walmsley at the far post and a drinks break son followed as home goalkeeper Watkins received treatment.

Ter Horst received the ball from Yusuff and hit a well-struck 67th minute shot that was charged down by Jack Penny.

Yusuff then ran at the home defence after a 70th minute Davies pass and the ball fell to Paxman who shot from the edge of the box but Watkins made a comfortable save.

Ramsgate had two chances in the 71st minute as firstly Munday found Lightfoot on the right whose good ball across goal just evaded Lawford at the far post and Jadama then forced a save from Shaw.

Ramsgate goalkeeper Watkins then saved with his feet in the 73rd minute when McCann found Yusuff on the left hand side of the penalty area.

Paxman received the ball from McCann and hit a well-struck 79th minute shot that was pushed away by Watkins beyond Walmsley and Penny put the ball out for a corner.

It was Paxman who then found Davies who played the ball out to Yusuff on the left a minute later but Watkins got behind the low shot.

An 82nd minute Nat Blanks cross was met by a Yusuff header but Watkins got behind it again.

Invicta gave late run outs to youth teamers Bradley Baker and Kieran Jones.

An 85th minute cross from Jones on the right was headed wide by Walmsley.

Lawford capitalised on a Blanks back pass two minutes later and played the ball back to Munday who swept his shot wide of the post.

A 90th minute Vinent tackle reached Paxman on the left whose ball in was cleared by Dickens as Invicta could not find a way to save the day.

Invicta’s Matt Newman was otherwise engaged at his wedding along with at least a couple of his team mates.

Former Invicta defender Liam Dickson was present at the game but missed out on the action with a groin problem.
