Johan Ter Horst made it a happy New Year for Folkestone Invicta by firstly being passed fit for their Kent derby against Margate and then scoring the only goal of the game for the home side in front of a season’s best 629 crowd at The Fullicks Stadium.

Invicta’s ninth consecutive home win in all competitions means that for two consecutive seasons the Folkestone club has now beaten Tonbridge angels on Boxing Day and then Margate on New Year’s Day.

The latest festive win over Tonbridge had come at a cost as both Ian Draycott (groin) and Kieron McCann (knee) were injured at The Longmead Stadium and did not feature here. Striker Luke Rowland had missed the Boxing Day game through illness but returned to the starting X1 here but the big news was the return of Ter Horst after missing seven matches with a knee injury.

Of Invicta’s other recent walking wounded, Scott Heard made a first home start since January 2018 after a knee operation, while fellow midfielders Ronnie Dolan (ankle) and Sam Hasler (stomach / appendix) were on the substitutes’ bench, with the latter coming on for the closing minutes.

Margate, who had not played since December 22nd, had problems of their own as George Brown was injured in the warm up which meant a start for Chris Barnard.

Invicta was to be the better side for the opening half an hour but could not add to their lead and Margate came back into the game to leave the home team having to dig in to hang on for all three points to move up to sixth place in the table.

The only goal came from the game’s first chance when Nat Blanks found Alfie Paxman whose ball into the box was headed across goal by Invicta captain Callum Davies and met by Ter Horst whose initial effort was cleared from close to the line by Margate captain Liam Friend before TER HORST headed in.

Invicta’s Paxman was playing against his twin brother Jack who was right back for Margate, while Friend was making his third appearance against the club for whom he made over 500 appearances and captained to the Isthmian League Division One title in 2015-16.

A 22nd minute Margate corner from the left was headed out by the Invicta defence and headed over by Alex Flisher from the edge of the area.

At the other end, Micheal Everitt found Ter Horst on the right in the 24th minute who picked out Heard on the edge of the box but the latter skied his shot over the crossbar.

Heard then won the ball two minutes later when a Ter Horst shot from outside the penalty area bounced up and off visiting goalkeeper Louis Wells.

A 36th minute Frannie Collin free kick was headed on by Friend at the far post and met by a Dave Martin touch that Invicta goalkeeper Tim Roberts got across to keep out after a foul by Paxman on Connor Dymond.

Invicta went close again in the 40th minute when Heard hit a free kick from the right up to Ade Yusuff who played it back to Paxman who embarked on a good run to create space and hit a well-struck shot that Wells did well to touch over the crossbar.

A Heard corner from the right during first half stoppage time was met by Josh Vincent who couldn’t quite force the ball in.

Blanks had a good game for Invicta and took advantage of a 48th minute slip by Martin before playing a ball in from the left towards Yusuff that was cleared by Friend.

Following a 50th minute foul by Finn O’;Mara, a Margate free kick from the left fell to Friend in the box who played it back to Martin and the latter’s shot was blocked by Davies or a corner.

Margate were still very much in it and Barnard found Martin on the right whose 55th minute ball into the box eluded Flisher who went to ground inside the box.

O’Mara played the ball forward down the left hand side of the box to Yusuff for Invicta two minutes later but the ball across goal was cleared.

The ball broke for Yusuff in the 67th minute but Wells got down to touch his low shot from the edge of the area past the post for a corner.

After a 73rd minute Dymond free kick from the left, a Collin ball into the box was put narrowly wide of the post after a Ben Swift touch.

A 76th minute Collin free kick from the left then took a couple of touches inside a crowded Invicta penalty area and was hooked wide by Friend.

Blanks intercepted a 77th minute Paxman clearance and Ter Horst rifled a low shot into the side netting.

Invicta’s Paxman then ran at the Margate defence down the right hand side a minute later but Wells got behind his low shot.

Margate continued to go forward in search of an equaliser and Martin picked Tom Mills out on the left in the 80th minute but the latter shot wastefully over the crossbar.

An 85th minute Yusuff shot curled wide of the target when Rowland played the ball back after a move that also involved Everitt, Ter Horst and Blanks.

Margate’s Paxman broke down the right hand side after initial passes from Jordan Robins and Barnard and the ball across goal was cleared by a stretching O’Mara.

The ball was played out again to Paxman on the right a minute later and this time Invicta substitute Hasler cleared the subsequent ball into the box.

Margate’s final chance to save hte day fell to Collin on the edge of the box seconds later but he fired over the bar.

There were bookings for Invicta’s O’Mara (73rd minute foul) and for Margate’s Barnard (reckless 17th minute challenge on O’Mara), Martin (45th minute shirt pull on Blanks), Flisher (raised arm in the 62nd minute) and Dymond (wild 69th minute challenge on Heard that referee Ian Fissenden went back to caution him for after playing an advantage).
