Folkestone Invicta moved up to second place in the Bostik League Premier Division table with a 2-0 win over fellow play off chasers Leiston at The Fullicks Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Sam Hasler and Ade Yusuff.

HASLER opened the scoring in the 44th minute when his shot from outside the penalty area went in off the post to leave goalkeeper Marcus Garnham rooted to the spot after a Kieron McCann corner from the left hand side.

Top goalsocrer Yusuff made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute with the 30th goal of his debut season with Invicta on his50th appearance with the Folkestone club.

This was a fixture between the division’s two most in-form sides as Neil Cugley’s team made it five wins from their last six league matches and unbeaten in their last ten.

Invicta had gone into the game with Josh Vincent back at the heart of the defence alongside captain Callum Davies after a three-match suspension and Ian Draycott back in the starting X1 in place of Johan Ter Horst.

The home side went close after just 39 seconds when striker Joe Taylor headed at goalkeeper Garnham after a Yusuff ball in from the right hand side.

Draycott then hit a low seventh minute shot at Garnham from the right hand side after a McCann pass.

At the other end, a Byron Lawrence corner from the right was not fully cleared a minute later and that led to a half chance for Christy Finch in a goalmouth scramble.

An 11th minute Kyle Hammond free kick from the left was met by Leiston captain Tom Bullard at the far post but the central defender couldn’t guide his header towards goal.

McCann volleyed over on the quarter of an hour mark when Taylor met a deep Hasler cross from the right with a far post header in a move started by Ronnie Dolan.

Garnham then got down to save in the 21st minute to deny Yusuff who had combined with Taylor in another move started by Dolan.

For Leiston, Hammond drilled the ball in from the right hand side after combining with striker Jake Reed in the 28th minute and Invicta’s Jerald Aboagye cleared it for a corner ahead of Darren Mills.

Yusuff broke down the right hand side a minute later and found Taylor but central defender Joe Jefford blocked the shot.

Draycott was then well off target when he fired over in the 31st minute when Yusuff played it back after a Hasler ball forward.

A Draycott touch released Yusuff a minute later who took the ball on and Garnham saved when the subsequent shot took a slight deflection.

Nat Blanks found Taylor on the left hand side in the 39th minute and the latter’s ball in found Draycott but Seb Dunbar made a saving tackle.

Draycott then found McCann whose 42nd minute shot looped up and hit the crossbar and came back down for Yusuff to put it in but an assistant referee’s flag was up for offside.

Invicta’s opening goal followed two minutes later and Garnham had touched the bal out for a corner.

The home side struck the crossbar again in the 47th minute with another Yusuff strike after a move involving Hasler, Taylor and Draycott and goalkeeper Garnham kept the ball out as it came back down and Taylor couldn’t quite fore it over the line.

A great 51st minute Lawrence ball over the Invicta defence sent Reed clear with a chance to equalise but Invicta goalkeeper Tim Roberts saved at the expense of a corner.

Invicta’s second goal followed a minute later when Yusuff combined with Draycott and Garnham saved YUSUFF’s initial shot before Draycott unselfishly squared the ball back across for the striker to score from close range.

The ball then fell to Hasler who hit a low 55th minute shot from outside the penalty area but Garnham got behind it.

Leiston made a triple substitution and enjoyed a lot of possession in the final half hour without finding the goal that they needed to spark any comeback.

Substitute Joe Marsden couldn’t quite get his head on a 61st minute Dunbar cross from the left.

Yusuff put Invicta substitute Ter Horst in ten minutes later but Hammond got across to avert the danger.

Leiston’s Lawrence did well again in the 77th minute when Invicta central defender Davies cleared in the middle and the ball came out to substitute Patrick Brothers who hit a well-struck shot against the crossbar.

The ball broke for Reed in the 83rd minute who took the ball on and a Finch shot deflected for a corner. Bullard headed wide from Brothers’ subsequent corner on the right.

Marsden was then put through in the 87th minute but was denied by a combination of defender Blanks and goalkeeper Roberts and Invicta substitute Micheal Everitt threw himself at the ball to block from Reed.

There had been bookings for Leiston’s Mills (39th minute challenge on Dolan) and Hammond (67th minute foul on Yusuff).
