F.A. TROPHY 1st QUAL. Round

MATCH REPORT  FOR       FOLKESTONE INV    V  LEATHERHEAD

 SCORE   5 - 1         Gate  281

DATE  27/10/18.

Folkestone Invicta enjoyed an emphatic 5-1 win over Leatherhead in Saturday’s Buildbase F. A. Trophy First Round Qualifying tie as strikers Johan Ter Horst (2), Kane Rowland and Ade Yusuff (2) were among the goals at The Fullicks Stadium.

It was an unusually comfortable victory as Invicta raced into a 3-0 first half lead and then went 5-0 up before Leatherhead enjoyed their best spell of the game during the final quarter of an hour.

Long-serving Invicta manager Neil Cugley will have enjoyed his Saturday night after a difficult few weeks in which little has gone in his side’s favour, particularly at home.

Both sides had come into the tie having suffered midweek disappointment. Invivta had lost 3-2 at home to Carshalton Athletic on Tuesday night when they went down to a stoppage time wonder goal. Leatherhead themselves then lost their F. A. Cup Fourth Round Qualifying replay 2-1 after extra time at home to Hitchin Town the next night having missed a penalty just before half time when 1-0 up.

Invicta kept the same starting X1 that had appeared on Tuesday and home supporters were treated to a virtuoso first half performance from Ter Horst.

The 23-year-old striker got in behind central defender Will Salmon as early as the second minute but scuffed his shot wide of the target.

But it was soon TER HORST who opened the scoring in the seventh minute when he headed in at the near post after Sam Hasler had sent over the game’s first corner from the right hand side.

Ter Horst then easily went past Will Seager in the 15th minute after receiving the ball from Alfie Paxman and played Ronnie Dolan in but the latter couldn’t quite dink the ball over goalkeeper Zaki Oualah.

John Ufuah got past Hasler down the right hand side two minutes later and played the ball back to captain Elliot Benyon who found D’Sean Theobalds inside the penalty area but Invicta captain Callum Davies charged down the subsequent shot.

A 21st minute Hasler ball into the penalty area then came off salmon for a corner with Ter Horst waiting to pounce again.

But TER HORST was to strike again in the 25th minute when he received the ball from Dolan and took on both Crossley Lema and Salmon before firing into the net.

It was all Invicta as Dolan and Micheal Everitt worked the ball across to fellow midfielder Hasler on the half hour mark and the latter skipped past a challenge before his shot from just outside the box was charged down by central defender Jerry Nnamani.

The home side increased its lead in the 38th minute as Rowland was involved at the start and the finish. The striker initially received the ball from goalkeeper Tim Roberts and made a great run down the right hand side before Ter Horst and Everitt worked the ball across to Paxman on the left whose inviting cross was volleyed in by ROWLAND at the far post.

Dolan then received the ball from Hasler two minutes later and fired over the bar from outside the penalty area.

The first half corner count of 7-0 reflected Invicta’s superiority.

Rowland lifted a 47th minute shot narrowly over the bar from just outside the penalty area after a couple more home corners at the start of the second half.

Finn O’Mara then had a shot from the right blocked after a move involving Paxman and Dolan.

It was 4-0 in the 54th minute when a clearance from goalkeeper Roberts was touched through by Ter Horst and YUSUFF slotted into the net.

Oualah pushed the ball away when Hasler played it in from the right on the hour mark and Davies fired over.

Yusuff made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute when he bundled over Lema, took the ball on and round goalkeeper Oualah before finding the net again.

Leatherhead then rallied as Theobalds made a great 68th minute run across from the left but Paxman blocked his shot.

After Leatherhead had made all three of their substitutions, Invicta made the first of their three changes as Phil Starkey came on for Matt Newman and O’Mara moved across to join Davies at the heart of the home defence.

Ter Horst lifted his shot over the bar when Dolan played the ball up to him.

Theobalds hit a low 76th minute shot against the post and the ball went out for Leatherhead’s first corner of the afternoon. It was following Theobalds’ set piece from the left that Roberts made a great double save, with the second one denying substitute Shaun Okojie at the expense of a Theobalds corner from the right.

The Tanners scored a consolation goal in the 79th minute when Theobalds and substitute Robert Mundow combined and OKOJIE’s shot from the right hand side went into the far corner of the net despite Roberts getting a hand on it.

Another Okojie shot from the right hand side of the box then flashed wide of the far post after a deep ball in from the left.

Okojie headed at Roberts after Beli Dembele’s stoppage time cross from the left and Lema then fired over from outside the penalty area after Dembele had found fellow substitute Mundow.

But the last chance fell to Invicta as Rowland latched onto a back pass but Oualah saved when the striker attempted to lift the ball over him.

Invicta’s Newman was the game’s only booking for a 41st minute trip on Theobalds after a touch from Benyon.

Ter Horst’s final touch of his first spell at Invicta had been a missed penalty in the 2014 Play Off Final shoot out defeat against Leatherhead before he joined then Premiership club Hull City. The young striker will have fonder memories of facing The Tanners here.

Ter Horst’s Invicta team mate Ian Draycott also missed a penalty in the above shoot out – for Leatherhead before joining the Folkestone club.

There was another pleasing sight for the Folkestone club after long-term injury absentee Scott Heard trained with the players before the game as he sets out on the comeback trail after a knee operation.
