Folkestone Invicta extended their lead at the top of the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division with victory over Horsham in Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash at the BuildKent Stadium as the home side missed and scored from the penalty spot after the interval.

By completing a league ‘double’ over newly-promoted Horsham, Neil Cugley’s side move three points clear at the top ahead of now second palced Worthing, with Horsham slipping down a place to third.

Both side had squandered a good first half chance, but the real drama followed during the second half.

Invicta were awarded their first penalty in the 52nd minute when Josh Vincent and Johan Ter Horst combined to find Ira Jackson inside the box who took it on before being impeded by Horsham captain Dylan Merchant. But goalkeeper George Bentley got across to keep out Jerson Dos Santos’ subsequent spot kick.

Referee Lee Dyson pointed to the spot again when this time it was Dos Santos that was brought down by Merchant on the right hand side of the box after receiving the ball from Jackson. This time it was JACKSON that stepped up to open the scoring from the spot in the 66th minute.

It was 2-0 in the 78th minute when an Alfie Paxman pass was met by a great first touch from Jackson down the right hand side whose initial strike was blocked before the subsequent ball across goal was turned into his own net by defender Joe SHELLEY close to the line.

But it was soon 2-1 in the 80th minute when a Charlie Harris cross from the left hand side was headed in by Horsham substitute and club legend Gary CHARMAN.

Kieron McCann fired against the post for Invicta in the 84th minute but Horsham came close to grabbing a last ditch equaliser when Jack Brivio headed over a Harris free kick from the right hand side deep into stoppage time.

Invicta had gone into the game with one enforced change as Ter Horst came in for Scott Heard who was suspended having been sent off at Lewes the previous Saturday. Ter Horst had scored the only goal when Invicta had inflicted Horsham’s first defeat of the season at their new Camping World Community Stadium back in August when goalkeeper Henry Newcombe had made his debut for the Folkestone club.

But the home side was out of sorts for the opening ten minutes as Horsham made the better start.

Shelley played the ball out of defence to find Kieron Pamment in space down the right hand side in the second minute when the latter’s low shot flashed wide of the far post across goal.

Horsham top goalscorer Chirs Smith was then guilty of a glaring fifth minute miss when a stray Ronnie Dolan pass back fell to him and the striker went round goalkeeper Newcombe but was wide of the far post with the goal at his mercy.

A seventh minute Dos Santos pass was then intercepted by Harvey Sparks who ran forward down the left hand side but the ball across goal evaded Smith in the middle and was put out for the game’s first corner.

Invicta gave the ball away again two minutes later when Pamment and Smith combined but Jerry O’Sullivan’s ball in from the right was cleared.

Pamment skipped past Invicta captain Callum Davies after receiving the ball from O’Sullivan in the ninth minute but home central defneder Matt Newman got across to avert the danger.

The home side survived again in the tenth minute when a scramble ensued after Newcombe had flapped at a Pamment corner from the right.

There was some respite for Invicta when Jackson got his shot in when Ter Horst slipped the ball through but Bentley got behind it after a 17th minute move started by Paxman and McCann.

Horsham then claimed an infringement in a crowded home penalty area following a 20th minute Pamment corner from the right.

At the other end, Dos Santos rifled a 27th minute low shot well wide after a Paxman throw in from the left.

Horsham had the ball in the net in the 29th minute when Shelley and Merchant at the back found Sparks on the left who got in behind Invicta right back Vincent before his cross was put in by Smith but the ‘goal’ was ruled out for offside.

Invicta gained their first corner of the game after half an hour when Dolan and Dos Santos combined to find Sam Hasler whose shot was charged down and Dolan’s delivery from the left was headed over by Vincent at the far post.

McCann and Ter Horst combined in the 37th minute when Dos Santos presented Jackson with a chance but the striker skied his shot over the bar.Invicta then had a big chance in the 39th minute when Dolan played the ball forward to Dos Santos to leave the home side 2 v 1 and the striker cut inside but his shot was saved by Bentley when Ter Horst was unmarked to the left.  Paxman then rifled a shot wide seconds later.

Ter Horst played a great 42nd minute ball to Jackson on the right and when the ball came in Dos Santos couldn’t get clean contact on his volley and shot wide.

Harris then found Pamment on the right in the 45th minute but the ball across goal was just above Sparks at the far post.

Horsham had a somewhat makeshift formation / personnel and made a tactical switch at half time as Sparks moved forwrad and Steve Metcalf dropped to left back.

Pamment played a dangerous low 50th minute ball across the Invicta goal but a stretching Newman cleared.

Dos Santos’ only previous penalty for Invicta had been his infmaous ‘Panenka’ dink over the crossbar in the F. A. Trophy at Maldon & Tiptree. Here his strike was more conventional and this time on target but again the big chance went begging.

Invicta’s Ter Horstr was booked for a 53rd minute foul as Horsham were able to fully clear their lines following the penalty save.

Jackson found Ter Horst on the left hand side in the 58th minute but the striker was denied by a Metcalf tackle.

A Hasler touch released Ter Horst a minute later and the striker raced through the middle before being brought down by Sparks who was booked. Hasler hit the subsequent free kick from an inviting central position just outside the box into the wall.

Dos Santos created space to get a low shot in but Bentley made a comfortable save on the hour mark in a move started by Hasler and McCann.

Horsham central defender Merchant was booked for a heavy 63rd minute foul on Newman and Hasler hit the free kick over the bar.

When he soon conceded a second penalty Merchant was fortunate that referee Dyson did not issue a second yellow card, but visiting manager Dom Di Paola was taking no chances and substituted his captain.

Having gone ahead, Invicta attacked again in the 72nd minute when Hasler found Paxman on the left but the latter’s cross did not get past goalkeeper Bentley.

A 73rd minute Hasler free kick from the right then came to Vincent at the far post who headed wide.

Invicta’s second goal followed but Charman soon reduced the arrears having come on as a substitute up front in place of Smith. Invicta goalkeeper Newcombe was booked for kicking the ball away after the goal.

Dos Santos squared the ball across from the left to striking partner Jackson on the right in the 82nd minute when the latter drilled a low shot wide across goal.

At the other end, the ball broke for Charman a minute later who slipped it through towards O’Sullivan but Paxman averted the danger.

McCann then struck the upright when Jackson played the ball back from the right hand side.

Brivio had taken over as captain when Merchant went off and he slipped the ball through to Metcalf down the left hand side of the box in the 86th minute but the imperious Newman got across to put the ball out for a corner.  Newcombe didn’t get a lot on his initial punch from the set piece but then held Charman’s subsequent header.

Invicta had to survive three late corners before gaining a stoppage time corner of their own when a Jackson shot was deflected over after the striker had comibned with Dos Santos when Newman won the ball.

But Horsham had their final last big chance with Brivio’s header followig a foul on O’Sullivan by Paxman.
