Corners: Invicta 7 Herne Bay 5

                                    FOLKESTONE INVICTA               5

                                    HERNE BAY                                     1

Folkestone Invicta were amongst the goals as they won 5-1 at home to Herne Bay in their penultimate pre-season friendly of the hot summer at The Fullicks Stadium on Tuesday night.

Johan Ter Horst (2), Ade Yusuff, Sam Hasler and Portuguese trialist Luis Medina scored the goals as Invicta recorded a first home win of the summer after five previous games against clubs above them in the non-league pyramid.

Herne Bay had stepped in to play the game at a day’s notice after their neighbours Whitstable Town had pulled out on Monday due to a lack of available players.

Invicta had given a run out to striker Harry Ottaway against Dartford on Saturday. The striker was not present tonight but is expected to feature again at Ashford this coming weekend.

On this occasion it was Medina who attracted much interest with his appearance as a second half substitute. The Portuguese striker had scored a lot of goals for Croydon Athletic last season and had appeared for Dover Athletic in a friendly against Invicta earlier in July when he had shot against a post after coming on as a second half substitute for Chris Kinnear’s side.

Matt Newman was back for Invicta after his recent wedding, while new father Ian Draycott was absent on paternity leave but goalkeeper Tim Roberts back after his own stag weekend!

Herne Bay’s goalkeeper had been injured at the weekend so Invicta’s Nick Shaw played in goal for the visitors having started for the Folkestone side on the previous two Saturdays.

In the opening exchanges, Tom Carlton played a good third minute ball out to Jake Embery on the left hand side and the striker shot at Roberts.

At the other end, Jack Evans found Yusuff down the left hand side of the penalty area a minute later when the latter’s ball across goal towards striking partner Ter Horst was cleared by central defender Matt Fry.

Sam Hasler – signed by Invicta from Herne Bay in 2016 – then blasted a seventh minute free kick over the crossbar from a central position after Simon Kabama had clattered into Ter Horst just outside the penalty area.

Herne Bay were to have their chances on the night an very nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Carlton initially had a good chance and during an almighty goal mouth scramble Alfie Paxman cleared off the line to deny one-time Invicta player Miles Cornwell.

But Invicta broke the deadlock a minute later when Paxman was involved again at the other end as he crossed from the left hand side and YUSUFF got there ahead of goalkeeper Shaw to find the target.

It was soon 2-0 in the 13th minute as a ball forward came off defender Fry and TER HORST was sharp to get there first and slotted his shot into the net with a great finish from the left hand side of the penalty area.

Paxman was to clear off the line again in the 19th minute when a Danny Leonard corner from the right was met   by a Danny Rumbil header.

Invicta were close again a minute later when a Ronnie Dolan shot struck the crossbar after Hasler found Ter Horst on the left hand side and the ball was not fully cleared.

The home side was then awarded a penalty following a foul by Brad Schaffer on Jerald Aboagye but Yusuff struck his 23rd minute spot kick against the crossbar.

It was 3-0 in the 33rd minute with a soft goal when goalkeeper Shaw was left unsighted after a HASLER free kick from the right hand side.

Evens took the ball into the penalty area when a Dolan corner from the left came back out to him four minutes later but the midfielder couldn’t quite guide his shot past Shaw.

The ball then came back out to Ter Horst in the 41st minute after he had initially received it from Dolan and the former then found Yusuff whose shot was blocked by Rumbil.

Evens headed over in the 44th minute when Paxman crossed from the left.

Yusuff drilled the ball across goal from the right hand side in the 51st minute when Paxman couldn’t quite force it in at the far post.

It was 4-0 a minute later when Hasler played the ball out to Aboagye on the right and the ball in was headed home by TER HORST in the middle.

Invicta threatened again in the 55th minute when captain Callum Davies headed against the far post after a Hasler corner from the right as the home side hit an upright for the third time in the match.

Ter Horst then burst through three minutes later and chipped over the crossbar after a move that also involved Newman and Medina.

The visitors pulled a goal back when a Carlton shot was deflected for a corner and Carlton’s 64th minute set piece from the left led to further Herne Bay chances before Connor WILKINS put the ball in from close range.

Invicta went forward again in the 66th minute when Ter Horst fired over from the right hand side after Davies and substitute Tom Walmsley had combined to find Paxman on the left.

Herne Bay threatened again six minutes later when Embery threaded the ball through to Cornwell but Invicta substitute Phil Starkey got across to avert the danger.

Invicta made it 4-1 to complete the scoring seconds later in the 72nd minute when a move down the left hand side was rounded off by a neat finish from debutant MEDINA.

Herne Bay responded as substitute Alex Mulrooney-Skinner did well down the right hand side in the 75th minute when his ball across goal just evaded a stretching Embery in the middle.  A Leonard shot was then charged down after a good run by Embery five minutes later.

At the other end, Medina curled an 81st minute shot over the crossbar after Paxman had broke down the left hand side.

The home side then played the ball out from the back a minute later when Starkey played it up to Paxman who threaded it through to Walmsley via a touch off a defender and the latter fired over the crossbar.

For Herne Bay, a stretching Mulrooney-Skinner volleyed over from the right hand side when Carlton played a good ball across from the left in the 86th minute.

A Leonard corner from the left was met by a Fry header a minute later but the central defender couldn’t find the target.

On another night Herne Bay could have scored more goals and Invicta goalkeeper Roberts made a superb 90th minute save onto the crossbar to deny Cornwell and Leonard was also very close to finding the net after a move down the left hand side involving Raph Brown.
