Folkestone Invicta competed their pre-season programme with a goalless draw at home to Dover Athletic at the BuildKent Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

This was Invicta’s tenth friendly and their first draw in their first match against a club ranked higher than them in the non-league pyramid.  Having begun pre-season wth a 2-1 defeat at Ramsgate on August 1st, Invicta had then won their next seven away matches before returning home with a 6-1 win over Ashford United the previous Saturday to lift both the Sid Burvill Trophy and George Sargeant Memorial Shield.

Invicta begin their Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division season at home to Worthing next Saturday, September 19th, whilst Andy Hessenthaler is still rebuilding his squad ahead of Dover’s Vanarama National League opener at home to Dover Athletic on October 3rd.

A second minute Scott Heard free kick was met by a David Smith header and Finn O’Mara couldn’t quite guide the ball in at the far post following a foul by Paul Rooney on new Invicta striker Smith, who once had a spell at Dover Athletic.

Central defender Rooney was booked as early as the sixth minute by referee Simon Finnigan for one too many early fouls on Smith.

Dover were then close in the 11th minute when Jack Munns hit a free kick from a central position against the crossbar from just outside the penalty area.

Heard crossed from the right hand side for Invicta in the 15th minute when Kieron McCann headed just wide at the far post.

Invicta threatened again in the 24th minute when Josh Passley headed away a Smith cross from the right and the visiting defender then headed away from close to the line whilst lying on the ground to keep out Heard’s hooked shot and McCann also couldn’t force the ball in.

At the other end, a 26th minute cross from the left evaded O’Mara and reached Louis Collins inside the penalty area but home captain and one-tine Dover defender Callum Davies threw himself across to block and keep the ball out at the far post.

Adem Ramadan then shot wide of the target from the right hand side after being found by RonniDolan in the 33rd minuteDover gained their first corner of the game in the 35th minute when Rooney headed over captainSam Wood’s set piece from the right.

A 40th minute Heard shot was blocked by one of the two trialists in Dover’s starting X1 after a Ramadan ball in from the right.

The same Dover trialist then played a good ball forward a minute later but home goalkeeper Henry Newcombe came out to claim the ball just ahead of Collins.

Invicta made five substitutions at half time, with Dover making the first three of their seven changes.

Home substitute Tyler Sterling fired over from outside the penalty area in the 47th minute.But Dover were close a minute later when a good ball found one of their two half time triailist substitute down the left hand side of the penalty area who shot across goal past substitute goalkeeper Tim Roberts but defender Davies threw himself to clear from close to the line.Dover substitute Steven Rigg hit a good 58th minute strike just over the bar.

Rigg was then just unable to convert at the far post in the 66th minute after a cross from the left and the ball was then threaded through to Rigg seconds later but carried to goalkeeper Roberts.

It was end to end as Invicta substitute Ian Draycott curled a 74th minute shot over from just outside the box and Rigg headed over after a ball into the box a minute later.

Invicta substitute Clark Woodcock hit an 82nd minute shot from the right hand side at Dover goalkeeper Josh Bexon, who has  strong local links.

The visitors, though, had the game’s last couple of chances as one of their trialist substitutes went past Invicta substitute Sam Hasler and Jordan Wright before Dolan blocked from close to the line for a corner in the 88th minute.

O’mara then had to make a tackle to avert the danger inside the penalty area a minute later.
