BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division leaders Folkestone Invicta came back from Carshalton Athletic with a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw at the War Memorial Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Tommy Bradford had given the home side a 38th minute lead but former Carshalton Athletic striker Jerson Dos Santos equalised just after half time.

Invicta’s lead at the top of the table may have been cut to two points but the Folkestone club’s long-serving manager Neil Cugley will certainly not be disappointed with this result against a side that he rates among the best in the division.

The Folkestone side had come unstuck on the 3G pitch here last season when Harry Ottaway scored a hat-trick for The Robins in a 4-23 home win. Striker Ottaway has recently returned to training again for the Surrey club and watched from the sidelines here.

Team news for Invicta saw Harry Newcombe given the nod in goal, with Tim Roberts on the substitutes’ bench, and Newcombe again produced some good saves to help earn the visitors a point.  Player-coach and record appearance holder Micheal Everitt (ankle) missed out in midfield and watched from the sidelines alongside assistant manager Roland Edge.

It was a wet afternoon with a strong wind, particularly during the second half, and chances were scarce in the opening exchanges.

Invicta left back Alfie Paxman put Bobby Price’s 14th minute ball in from the right hand side out for the game’s first corner after home captain Paris Hamilton-Downes had headed the ball to Christie Pattisson inside the visitors’ penalty area.

The h0ome side then had to make an early change when Ernold Haxhiu replaced the injured Olawale Sogbanmu.

Invicta’s Scott Heard tried his luck from distance in the 22nd minute but was well wide.

Sam Hasler then received the ball from Ronnie Dolan and played a good ball to Kieron McCann on the left hand side and home goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou touched the ball past the post for Invicta’s first corner of the game.

Pattisson shot over the crossbar with the best chance thus far when the tricky Bradford and Ricky Korboa combined to put him through on the half hour mark after Hamilton-Downes had cleared a Hasler free kick following a foul on Dos Santos by Daniel Pappoe.

Heard played a 34th minute ball in from the left that Ira Jackson couldn’t quite convert in the middle in a move started by Hasler and McCann.

The home side went ahead when BRADFORD lifted his shot into the corner of the net with a very well-taken finish after Price’s ball into the box had gone over the goalscorer’s marker Dolan.

An Invicta corner at the other end saw Hasler’s 41st minute ball in from the right headed wide by Josh Vincent at the far post.

A Bradford free kick from the left hand side a minute later got a touch off Hasler and Newcombe had to touch the ball past the post for a corner on the right hand side.

Hamilton-Downes played the ball through towards Korboa during first half stoppage time but it carried to Newcombe.

Invicta made a purposeful start to the second half and Heard combined with Jackson before McCann’s ball in from the left was put out for a corner by Kershaney Samuels.

The equaliser soon followed after the 49th minute corner when Hasler’s short set piece came back out to him before  the bal deflected to DOS SANTOS who put it into the net.

The visitors themselves then had to survive a dangerous couple of minutes.

Pappoe played a 53rd minute ball into the box towards Pattisson but Vincent guided it back to Newcombe.  The ball was played in to Korboa seconds later but Newcombe came out to make a good save.

Pattisson then found Korboa whose dangerous 54th minute ball across goal from the left hand side was put over by Haxhiu at the far post.

At the other end, a 61st minute Hasler free kick from distance was touched past the post for a corner on the right hand side.

When Invicta captain Callum Davies played it out of defence in the 65th minute Pappoe beat Jackson to the ball and found Pattisson who touched it back to Haxhiu but the latter’s shot lacked sufficient power to beat Newcombe.

Danny Dudley played the ball forward to Samuels down the left hand side in the 71st minute but Newcombe made a one-handed save.

Newcombe made another save at the expense of a corner two minutes later when the home side broke as Haxhiu found Pattisson on the right who played the ball across to Korboa at the far post. The chance came after Hasler had initially played a free kick forward to Paxman at the other end.

The subsequent home corner from the left was met by a Dudley header and McCann blocked a Pattisson volley.

A 75th minute Pappoe ball forward was met a Pattisson touch but Invicta  central defender Davies got to the ball before Korboa to avert the danger.

Price’s clearance fell to Dolan a minute later and the Invicta midfielder’s well-struck shot from outside the penalty area was touched over the crossbar for a corner.

Korboa fired wide of the target from the left-hand side in the 86th minute after a Samuels ball into the box.

There were bookings for Carshalton’s Luke Read (bringing down McCann during stoppage time) and for Invicta’s Hasler (pulling back Haxhiu in the 57th minute).

Carshalton have a big F. A. Cup First Round tie at home to Boston United next on Saturday November 9th, while Invicta do not play again until Wednesday November 13th as F. A. Trophy opponents Maldon and Tiptree also have a weekend F. A. Cup tie (away to Leyton Orient on Sunday).  Invicta’s scheduled league opponents Kingstonian are also still in the F. A. Cup and play at Macclesfield on Sunday.
