Folkestone Invicta returned to winning ways as goals from Kieorn McCann (2) and Jerson Dos Santos gave Neil Cugley’s side victory over Brightlingsea Regent at the BuildKent Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Invicta’s14-match unbeaten league run had come to an end with a narrow defeat at Hornchurch on Tuesday night when the Essex club went top and the Folkestone club dropped from first to fourth in the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division.

Hornchurch themselves lost 1-0 away to new leaders Horsham in another second v first fixture on Saturday as Invicta themselves moved back up to second place.

Invicta were in need of a positive result having not won any of their previous three fixtures in all competitions – each away from home . The Folkestone club’s last win had been in their previous home fixture – against Bishop’s Stortford – three weeks earlier which was then a fifth successive victory.

Home team news had seen Scott Heard return from a back injury to come in for fellow midfielder Sam Hasler who had to watch from the sidelines having gone off at Hornchurch with a first half ankle injury.

Remarkably, for a third successive weekend, Invicta came up against a club that had lost their manager in the preceding week.

McCann did well for the home side on the left hand side in the fourth minute when he cut inside and fired in a shot just over the crossbar.

But the visitors looked like opening the scoring in the sixth minute when Billy Hunt latched onto George Doyle’s ball forward down the right hand side and put the ball over home goalkeeper Tim Roberts but was just wide of the far post.

At the other end, Ira Jackson received the ball from Ronnie Dolan and took the ball across from the right hand side before getting in a 13th minute shot that was deflected for the game’s first corner.

A Dos Santos shot on the turn was then saved by visiting goalkeeper Charlie Turner after a ball into the middle from Jackson on the right hand side four minutes later.

Invicta went ahead in the 20th minute when Josh Vincent played the ball forward up the right hand side and Dos Santos played it across for McCANN to slot into the net.

But Brightlingsea Regent equalised following their first corner of the afternoon in the 27th minute when Charlie Lindoe’s ball over from the right hand side was met by a far post header before coming back out and Romario DUNNE’s well-struck shot deflected in off home central defender Matt Newman.

The visitors seemed et to score again in the 33rd minute in very similar circumstances to Hunt’s earlier chance. This time the striker got in behind Invicta captain Callum Davies when Joe Yaxley chipped the ball forward and the subsequent shot once again went over Roberts but just wide of the far post.

Invicta then began to get on top as Heard received the ball from player-coach Micheal Everitt on the right, cut inside and got a shot in that Turner kept out and held at the second attempt.

Dos Santos then received a pass from Everitt and took the ball across the penalty area but his 35th minute shot was blocked and McCann’s follow up shot was then blocked by Ricky Griggs.

A 36th minute McCann chip into the box was then headed wide by Vincent at the far post in a move that also involved Dolan.

Jackson then combined with McCann but the striker’s run was curtailed by a Josh Gould foul that led to strong penalty appeals from home players and supporters alike. But a free kick was awarded right on the edge of the penalty area and Jackson’s 39th minute set piece from an inviting position hit the top of the crossbar and went over.

Gould became the only player to be booked by referee Gerry Heron.

Alfie Paxman received the ball from Davies and took it on in the 41st minute and got a shot in that Turner got down to touch past the post for a corner.

A corner from the right hand side then came back out to Dolan on the edge of the box a minute later who got a shot in but Jake Gould cleared from close to the line.

Invicta restored its lead in the 43rd minute when Heard played the ball through to DOS SANTOS who confidently slotted it into the net.

A long throw in from Josh Gould caused problems inside the Invicta penalty area during first half stoppage time and eventually fell to visii9tng captain Matt Cripps before a Jake Turner shot was blocked.

Home strikers Dos Santos and Jackson combined in the 53rd minute when the former got the first shot in and the latter was then denied by Yaxley from close range.

It was 3-1 in the 54th minute when a Heard run was followed by a Dos Santos bal out to the left hand side where McCANN fired well into the net for his second goal of the game.

Brightlingsea Regent is a side that keeps on going and a 62nd minute Fahad Nazor shot from the left hand side was saved by Roberts after the substitute had been found by Turner.

Invictta then played the ball up the right hand side when Dos Santos pulled it back to Jackson whose well-struck shot hit a defender on the head.

Jackson hit a low shot from the right hand side just wide of the far post across goal when striking partner Dos Santos got in behind Cripps and played the ball out to him in the 72nd minute.

Invicta then made a triple substitution as Johan Ter Horst, Finn O’Mara and Ian Draycott came on for Dos Santos, Everitt and Dolan.

Jake Gould took the ball forward for the visitors and fired wide in the 81st minute.

It was 3-2 when HUNT hit a well-struck 85th minute penalty that Roberts went the right way for after a clip by Heard on Nazor after Hunt had latched onto a ball down the left hand side of the penalty area and played it back.

There was now a nervy finale for the home side and Brightlingsea Regent centre half Gould stayed forward for the closing minutes.

Invicta threatened again during stoppage time when McCann found Paxman on the left whose god ball across goal was met by a far post Heard header that was saved at the expense of a corner that also served to run the clock down.

Brightlingsea Regent had completed a league ‘double’ over Invicta last season but the Folkestone club here reversed the 3-2 scoreline of last season’s corresponding fixture.
