Folkestone Invicta completed their pre-season programme with a 4-0 win away to Ashford United in the annual George Sargeant Memorial Shield fixture at The Homelands on Saturday afternoon.

Ronnie Dolan, Alfie Paxman, Luis Mednia and new signing Kane Rowland scored the goals as Neil Cugley’s side enjoyed a comfortable victory.

This is the third summer in which Invicta have travelled to Ashford to contest the George Sargeant Memorial Shield and the Folkestone club has now scored four goals on each occasion having lost 5-4 in 2016 and won 4-1 in 2017.

George Sargeant was a player, manager and physio at Ashford for 52 years between 1952-2004 before he sadly passed away in 2015 aged 95.

Invicta have signed 22-year-old striker Rowland from Sittingbourne and the striker – who has also had spells at Ramsgate, Whitstable Town and Margate – came straight into the starting X1.

Portuguese trailist Medina was to come off the bench to score as a substitute for the second successive game, but there was to be no re-appearance for striker Harry Ottaway who had played for Invicta at home to Dartford the previous Saturday.

Invicta went ahead after just 62 seconds as an Ian Draycott cross from the right hand side led to a defensive mix up and one-time Ashford player DOLAN scored from close range.

Ashford responded as visiting goalkeeper Tim Roberts made a good fifth minute save to keep out a shot from the left hand side of the box when Sam Corne played the ball back.

For Invicta, Alfie Paxman hit a speculative 12th minute shot from outside the area that was narrowly wide of the post.

It was 2-0 in the 29th minute when PAXMAN capitalised on a stray pass and slotted a low finish into the net

Visiting defender Matt Newman – who also had a spell at Ashford – played a good 53rd minute ball out to Paxman on the left who drilled a low shot tamely wide of the far post across goal.

The home side threatened two minutes later when a Corne corner from the left was met by an Oliver Rowe header at the far post that goalkeeper Roberts got up to save.

Clark Woodcock made a good 60th minute run into the Invicta penalty area but eventually over-ran the ball and Roberts came out to claim.

Invicta went close again in the 63rd minute when debutant Rowland received the ball from Micheal Everitt and his shot from outside the penalty area deflected off Joshua Oyinsan’s head before being touched over the crossbar by goalkeeper Aaron Lee-Wharton.

The visitors increased their lead in the 69th minute when Rowland put the ball through to the on-side MEDINA who was in the clear and calmly finished into the net.

Newman played the ball out to Ade Yusuff two minutes later whose ball in was just behind Dolan in the middle.

Invicta struck again to complete the scoring seconds later in the 71st minute when Jerald Aboagye combined with Everitt on the right hand side and played the bal across goal for ROWLAND to score from close range.

The visitors threatened again in the 75th minute when Aboagye found Yusuff who played a one-two with Draycott but goalkeeper Lee-Wharton came out to save with his legs to keep out Yusuff’s shot from the right hand side of the area.

Corne took the ball down well after receiving it from Jordan Johnson-Palmer in the 86th minute and juggled his way past Newman but was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post.

Johnson-Palmer then played an 88th minute ball in from the left to Corne but Newman this time blocked his shot.

Among Invicta’s second half substitutes were youth teamers Bradley Baker and Jordan Small.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Roberts (Shaw 71 mins), Aboagye, Newman, Everitt, Davies (Small 75 mins), Evans (Baker 49 mins), Ter Horst (Yusuff 45 mins), Dolan, Draycott, Rowland, Paxman (Medina 57 mins).
