GUERNSEY 0

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta drew 0-0 for a second successive Saturday as their weekend trip to Guernsey resulted in a goalless draw on a sunny afternoon at the Footes Lane Stadium.

All three results between Guernsey and Invicta have now finished in stalemates: 1-1, 2-2 and now 0-0.

The game’s better chances came during the second half when Invicta pressed for a breakthrough, but Guernsey hit the underside of the crossbar through Dave Rihoy and then had a couple of very late chances.

The Folkestone side went into the game with Paul Booth and Ian Draycott back in partnership up front and Matt Newman back in midfield as Darren Smith (unwell) did not travel.

Guernsey were without injured talisman Ross Allen who had missed the midweek defeat at Faversham after scoring seven goals in his three starting appearances including a hat-trick in the 8-1 home rout over Three Bridges to go back to the top of the Ryman League Division One South goalscoring charts.

Consistent

Nat Blanks (left), - one of Invicta's more consistent performers this season - and Jon Pilbeam worked the ball up the left hand side to Draycott in the eighth minute but the ball was cleared when the latter attempted to square the ball to striking partner Booth instead of having a shot himself.

Newman played the ball in towards Booth five minutes later but home goalkeeper Chris Tardif claimed as the ball carried through.

Draycott and Booth combined when Blanks played the ball up again in the 14th minute but Tom Martin played the ball out for the game’s first corner.

At the other end, the ball fell to Rihoy on the edge of the penalty area on the quarter of an hour mark and he worked the ball out to Dominic Heaume on the right hand side but Blanks got across to clear.

Rihoy shot at Invicta goalkeeper Tim Roberts in the 26th minute after a Ryan Zico Black ball when IJnvicta lost possession after a Josh Vincent ball to Micheal Everitt.

Blocked

For Invicta, a 29th minute Newman shot was blocked after a Booth ball in a move started by Draycott.

A Craig Young shot on the turn flashed just wide of the IJnviucta post on the half hour mark when he was found by Rihoy.

Invicta goalkeeper Roberts got down to save from Zico Black as Guernsey gained their first corner of the afternoon in the 32nd minute when Zico Black and Heaume found Nigel Hutton on the right and he beat the Invicta offside trap.

Tardif then got down to palm away a 35th minute Pilbeam shot from the left hand side of the penalty area after a ball forward from Newman.

Everitt blocked a Kieran Mahon shot four minutes later when the ball was played up to Rihoy on the right hand side.

Draycott and Pilbeam worked the ball across to Jordan Wright on the left in the 40th minute and the latter’s shot deflected for a corner.

Invicta manager Neil Cugley had watched the first half from the stands and saw Everitt get across to clear when Heaume nodded the ball down for Young and Roberts touched a Young shot from the left hand side of the penalty area round the post before the interval.

The visitors had a couple of chances early in the second half as Tardif saved at his near post when Blanks drilled a low shot from the left hand side of the penalty area after a Newman ball from the right and Draycott shot into the side netting from the right after a Booth ball.

At the other end, a Rihoy shot was charged down when Glyn Dyer passed to Young in the 50th minute and Young got a shot in from a central position on the edge of the penalty area when Invicta captain Liam Friend headed away a Hutton cross from the right.

The closest moment to a goal came in the 63rd minute when Rihoy took the ball on and shot against the underside of the crossbar when an advantage was played following a foul by Friend on Young. Referee Paul Howard then went back to book the Invicta central defender.

Newman headed over a Blanks cross from the left a minute later, while Young soon shot over when Rihoy pulled the ball back to him.

Guernsey captain Sam Cochrane then joined his Invicta counterpart (both captain and number four) Friend in referee Howard’s notebook.

Expense

Friend stopped Rihoy in his tracks when Guernsey broke again in the 58th minute through Young and Heaume.

Home goalkeeper Tardif got down to save at the expense of a corner on the hour mark to keep out a far post Booth header following a dangerous run and cross from Wright on the left.

A hamstring injury saw Everitt replaced by recent signing Joe Taylor – making his league debut for Invicta after two F A Cup ties against hometown club Margate – as Draycott dropped back into midfield.

But it was Guernsey’s first substitute Marc McGrath that almost made an instant impact when the ball was played to him down the left hand side of the penalty area but Friend blocked his 66th minute shot.

Young sliced his shot wide of the target in the 71st minute after a deep cross from the right to substitute Luke Winch.

But Invicta had a clear chance of their own two minutes later when Wright won the ball and gave it to Tayloron the left to leave Invicta two against one but substitute over-hit his attempted pass to Booth instead of going for goal alone and the latter’s ball back across goal was held by Tardif.

The home defence gave the ball away to Taylor in the 77th minute but the chance went astray and Pilbeam fired over.

Invicta were looking the more likely winners as Pilbeam shot into the side netting from the left after passes from Taylor and Draycott and right back Vincent fired over when Taylor played the ball back to Draycott after a sliced clearance from goalkeeper Tardif following a good Wright run.

Booth headed cover in the 82nd minute when Taylor spread the paly from the left to Vincent on the right and Booth drilled a low shot wide of the far post across goal after passes from Draycott and Taylor two minutes later.

Folkestone goalkeeper Roberts (right) - who matched opposite number Tardif as one of the more impressive players on the park - came out to clear when Jamie Dodd played an 87th minute free kick up to Winch following a foul by Frankie Chappell.

Out bravely

There were chances at both ends in the 88th minute as Roberts came out bravely to save after a cross from the right into McGrath and Tardif got down to save a low Draycott shot when Booth played the ball back.

A Pilbeam shot was then blocked close to the line a minute later when Wright, Booth and Taylor on the left worked the ball across to the right.

But Guernsey had chances to take all three points during stoppage time.

Chappell got across to clear when the ball broke to Winch inside the penalty area and Heaume then did not good connection on his shot when the ball came out to him.

McGrath was then left with regrets as he shot wide across goal with the very last kick of the match from the left hand side of the penalty area after a pass from fellow substitute Winch.

Invicta manager Cugley adopted the role of pantomime villain as he left the field as the home crowd reacted to comments that he had made before the trip as to the islanders’ participation in the league.

It was the first time that Guernsey had failed to score in a home game so far this season.
